Santa: All I Want For Christmas Is a New Laptop

If Black Friday is any indication consumer electronics will continue to be at the top of many people's holiday wish lists this year. For three lucky winners of the "Need a Tech Makeover" contest sponsored by Federated Media, HotHardware and Intel, the holidays came early this year, as they were rewarded with a package of electronics goodies, including a new Intel Centrino 2 processor-powered laptop, digital camera, printer/scanner and more.

The three winners - an owner of a small business coming into the 21st century, a mother reconnecting with the world after battling cancer and a small farm creating a community co-op - all represent different facets of everyday life in the US and around the world. They are you and me - people who use digital technology to enhance their lives and their surrounding communities, families and businesses.

In marketing materials you often hear the phrases digital divide.... connect with family and friends...be more efficient and effective with technology. But the videos of these three winners really brought these concepts to life for me.

Christine, a mother who is in remission from cancer, talks about a need "to reconnect with the world." Keith who owns a small non-profit says he needs "technology to revamp and catch up with the 21st century." And Susan who owns a small fiber, co-op sheep farm talks about how technology can assist with her community supported agriculture and annual sheep sheering party.

I loved these people. I loved their videos. I loved their stories. They aren't just excited to get new laptops and technology - they are exuberant, imagining how the technology will open new doors and opportunities for them.

I wish the winners (and all the contest participants) all the best in the new year as they enjoy their new digitally enhanced lives!
