40 Finalists for Intel Science Talent Search Announced!

Last week I posted a blog about the Intel Science Talent Search. I'm excited to expand on that post with this weeks announcement of 40 finalists from across the country! As mentioned in my earlier post, the lucky 40 will head to Washington D.C. in March to compete for over $1 million in awards and scholarships ranging from $5,000 scholarship grants and laptop computers to the grand prize of a $100,000 college scholarship. With the announcement of the finalists we also get insight into what types of research projects they've been working on for this year's competition.

My favorite finalists projects include a project from Michael Loy from right here in Portland Oregon! Michael's project aims to help increase the useful life of our nation's concrete infrastructure by adding a chemical buffer solution to the initial concrete mixture. This project is extremely timely as the US recently received a "D" grade for our countries infrastructure. Ugh.

Another one of my favorite entries comes from New York's Chelsea Lynn Jurman. Chelsea conducted a survey to determine the factors that predict underage drinking. Her survey results suggest that a teen's perception of their parents' behaviors as an adolescent is positively liked to the teen's own alcohol use and also that teens are less likely to drink when they are closely supervised. Also a very timely study as teen drinking is being looked at as an epidemic in the US.

The other 38 projects are equally interesting and thought provoking and remember these are 17 and 18 year olds developing theories and conducting research!
