Portland: Wake up to WiMax!

Tomorrow will be an exciting day here in Portland as Intel and Clear (the company formed by Sprint and Clearwire) launch the brand new WiMax network! Portland joins Baltimore MD as one of the first two cities nation wide outfitted with the new technology. Thanks to my Intel connections, I'm taking a sneak peak of the new WiMax network as I type.

If you haven't heard of WiMax, the technology turns cities into full blown "hot spots" allowing you, me or anyone within the coverage area (in this case Portland and surrounding areas like Intel's OR headquarters in Hillsboro :) ) to be online anywhere, any time.

To compliment the new WiMax technology, Intel is introducing WiMax enabled Centrino 2 systems. This means that WiMax will be built in to your new PC, no need for external hardware. If you can't go out and by the new Centrino 2 system just yet no worries, between the Clear USB for on the go usage and the Clear Modem for at home, you've got options for getting online. After you chose your hardware all you need is to select a Clear usage plan.

For more information about WiMax/Clear plans and harware visit www.clear.com. Stay tuned, much more to come as WiMax launches bright and early tomorrow morning!

Wow, that sounds great. So who is clearwire? I took a look at the clear.com page and had a couple of questions. Are you familiar with the capabilities or stability of the network? How long has it been in place? Sorry, I was'nt familiar with it..
Thanks!

Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment! Clearwire is a company out of the Seattle area that focuses on broadband and wireless internet. WiMax launch January 6th here in Portland and back in October the first network launched in Baltimore MD.

I've actually been able to test the network and so far so good! If you go to clear.com you can check out the coverage area's here in Portland.

I have problems with my laptop, which can't connect to most wireless access points.
My company has a lot of laptops but it is only Intel wireless that doesn't work.
I have had to ask my IT manager to change my machine for one that works!
