What's Next in the World of Filmmaking?

The Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, CA kicks off this week — February 25 through March 8, 2009.

TRANSFORM is this year’s theme, and you can see some of the movie trailers on The Cinequest YouTube channel.

If you like the cutting edge, Cinequest is a great place for new movies and innovations that are changing the movie industry. Heck, maybe next year we’ll get to put on glasses and see new 3-D movies created with InTru3D.

This is the fourth year Intel has sponsored. I remember last year’s festival well, where I saw a panel on new movie distribution technologies and services.

This year, the new Widget Channel will be talked about in the Television & the Internet panel. The Widget Channel is helping companies like the Associated Press bring their Internet news service to Internet-connected TVs. Here’s a video I shot at the Consumer Electronics Show in January showing how AP’s Widget Channel works.

One movie that my Intel Education pals are excited about is Whiz Kids by award-winning filmmakers Tom Shepard and Tina DiFeliciantonio, who follow the inspirational stories of three remarkable and passionate scientists who, at the age of 17, are already improving lives and our future. This film was not commissioned by Intel, but it does shows the high school emotion and amazing intelligence that swirls around every year at the Intel-sponsored Intel Science Talent Search and Intel Science and Engineering Fair.

Here ‘s more on the innovation forum featuring Intel that I’ll be attending on February 28 from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. at the San Jose Repertory Theatre:

THE MARRIAGE OF TELEVISION & THE INTERNET: Home entertainment systems remain the preferred means for the majority of film viewing; however, the Internet has made great strides in democratizing film delivery, providing more choices, and making it easier to browse, socialize, select and view films.

What if these worlds came together, integrating into one experience?

Could film lovers enjoy the best of all worlds while giving Independent and International filmmakers more audience and more money?

  • Lance Koenders, Technical Assistant to Senior VP, Intel Digital Home Group
  • Patrick Barry, Connected TV Group, Yahoo!
