Intel Posse and a Dozen MIDs Gettin' Busy at SXSW Interactive
A posse of Intel employees representing Arizona, California and Oregon are heading to the South by Southwest Interact festival from March 13-17.
We’ll be packin’ 15 new Mobile Internet Devices (MID), each powered by the tiny, might Intel Atom processor. If the wireless Gods are kind enough, three of the MIDs will be connected to the Internet through 3G while the others will tap into Wi-Fi available around downtown Austin, TX.
We’ll be there meeting with developers, mobile gadget experts like MIDmoves and many of the talented Intel Insiders like Frank Gruber, Brian Solis, Irina Slutsky, Sarah Austin and hopefully iJustin.
Riding for the Intel Software and Service team is Jeff Moriarty, a.k.a @jmoriarty, the king MID slinger who will share his SXSW experiences on Mobile Community developers.
Another Intel dude working with developers is Aaron Tersteeg, who also goes by @tersteeg. He’ll be on the scene talking about how developers can code their software and services to take advantage of the latest multi-core processors, like the Intel Core i7. He’ll share his SXSW experience on the Parallel Programming and Multi-core Community.
Rounding out the crew:
- Bryan Rhoads @bryanrhoads
- Carolina Velis @cvelis
- Charlton Barreto @charltonb
- Ken Kaplan, yours truly @kenekaplan
Bryan and I will share SXSW photos and video on the Inside Scoop blog.
Check in once in a while, share your thoughts and send us on a few assignments.

On our SXSW to do list:
Rat Pack Party with Microsoft Mobile and Intel Insider Brian Solis
Adobe Breakfast with our friend @SocialJulio
Facebook Dev Garage at Pangea Dell Cocktails and Conversations Parallel Programming Talk live, University of Texas Campus on Monday, March 16.
The {RV}IP Lounge is a karaoke tricked-out motor home where passengers will surf the Internet and learn the differences between nifty, low cost netbook and a full performance notebook. We’ll plan a few ride-along meet-ups with developers and Insiders, after finding the right stop along tweet stream at @rviplounge and the fun on the RVIP Lounge Website.
Pool 2.0 Match and Meet Up hosted by @ChrisHeuer and @KristieWells of the Social Media Club on Sunday, March 15
Techcab Confessions — Lovely Intel Insider Irina Slutsky of Geek Entertainment TV will be driving Web Celebrities around Austin in a Chrysler 300C while live video streaming the backseat conversations about life, love and the pursuit of great technology. She’ll be using one of our MIDs and you can watch whenever she’s live here:
Rocketboom — I’ll be watching for the Rocketboom crew on the scene and hopefully get some hometown Austin tips from Andrew Baron.
And much time — our eyes and minds — left wide open for serendipity!

We're on the cusp of something great with MIDs, I feel. With the upcoming Intel Silverthorne and the NVIDIA Tegra, we finally have processors that are purpose-built to dig respectable performance out of a low-wattage application.
What's really going to make or break the MID is not the hardware -- an inevitability -- but the UI. Ux polish on MIDs has been pretty lacking, and I feel that if someone (Microsoft, the *NIX crowd, or whomever) can crack that nut to provide a productive and intuitive UI, the MID market will just explode.
I can't wait! I'm looking forward to the day I can toss a landscape clamshell QWERTY MID in my pocket with LTE, WiMax & WiFi radios to get internet everywhere. Having those resources on hand will be killer for me, and I can just marvel at the types of "sixth sense" applications an open MID platform can offer.
