Can you Hulu?

Being a little bit of a technology laggard, I was surprised to recently learn that a lot of the fantastic HD video that I watch online is in part because I have a newer laptop powered by the Intel Core2 Duo processor.  It turns out that a good friend of mine cannot watch his favorite television shows online -- because they come across really choppy on his older desktop.  They are just unwatchable.

I was laughing because originally, my friend was making fun of me for not having a DVR.  (That's right.  I don't.)  But my little secret is that I don't need one.  I can watch almost any of my favorite TV shows online in superb quality without it - on my laptop.

Between sites like Hulu.com, NBC.com, and ABC.go.com, so many of my favorite TV shows are only a click away --- whenever and wherever I want to watch them.  So, can you Hulu?  Do you?  What other sites do you use for watching great HD video online?

Viliv MID taking Pre Orders Today!

Ya'll know me by now. I usually don't spout out marketing messages on this blog but consider this one exception. I had the Viliv MID (review below) over the weekend and I fell in love with it; mainly because I was able to download and use Tweetdeck, something that failed to work on previous devices.

So here is the marketing message. Starting today (April 27th @ 1:00 PM EST), Dynamism is accepting pre-orders for $599, with the first orders expected to ship on May 8th. And, as an added incentive, those who pre-order will also get a spare battery, a car kit, and a leather pouch, which Dynamism says is a $135 value.

WiMAX Gets a Rocketboom Tech Treatment

A week prior to getting Intel Insiders inside the Intel WiMAX labs in Hillsboro, Oregon, Rocketboom's Ellie Rountree took time during her Great Northwest visit to get a more in-depth, inside-the-labs experience of what WiMAX really is, how it works and why they call it 4G.

Intel Insiders See A Fab, Try WiMAX... and more!

Intel Insiders Frank Gruber, Cathy Brooks, Sarah Austin, Tom Foremski, Irina Slutsky and her colleague Kevin took over Portland yesterday, making stops at an Intel manufacturing facility (called a "fab") where we make chipsets, Intel's digital health lab and also the Intel My WiFi lab. They're getting a good taste of Intel and Portland culture!

A few of these guys even tried out Clear's Portland WiMAX network using an Intel-based notebook as they traveled to a Tweet-Up last night at the Green Dragon Bistro and Brew Pub with the Portland Social Media Club.

Where do you want the Internet?

On CNN this morning, there's an article about Nettops, another internet device powered by the Intel Atom processor.  In my previous posts, I've talked about wanting a stylish little netbook - to carry around in my purse.  But now, I'm kinda starting to think that I want a nettop on my kitchen counter too.  True, I could use the netbook in the kitchen, but I kinda like the idea of having an unmoveable internet device on my countertop.  It could be the recipe organizer and family calendar and it wouldn't get lost in the house!  I surfed around a little bit and found a touchscreen version of the nettop that would fit the bill just perfectly on Amazon.com:

Intel Insiders Set to Explore Intel Fab, Labs and WiMAX in Oregon

Tomorrow and Friday, I'll be joining a handful of Intel Insiders to get an insider's, hands-on look at the Intel innovation engines rockin' in Oregon.

Tom Foremski shared his excitement about the trip this week, as did the Portland Social Media Club, which will join us for a Thursday evening Tweetup at the legendary Green Dragon.

In addition to visiting Intel's Fab 20, and the healthcare, My Wi-Fi and WiMAX labs, we're also taking the opportunity to have the Intel Insiders meet with our Intel's Center of Excellence and Software & Services Group, two groups pionnering Intel's social media efforts.

We'll be sharing the experience through @intel, and we'll share some videos and photos here on the Inside Scoop, Intel Fan page in Facebook and Channel Intel on YouTube.

Conversation from Intel's Corner Office

I’m a big fan of American Public Media’s daily radio show MarketPlace. I love the turn-of-phrase masters behind the mic — from the David Brancaccio before 2005 to the show’s current host, Kai Ryssdal. The show delivers some of public radio’s edgiest, anecdotal descriptions of the day’s business news.

First batch of Intel 32nm Microprocessor test chips That’s why I was fired up to learn that Ryssdal was visiting Intel headquarters to interview Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini.

I listen to the show driving up and down the main artery of Silicon Valley, HWY 101. After hearing the Intel segment, I got home and checked out the MarketPlace Website Website, which served up the audio file, transcript of the full interview and other background related to Otellini and Intel. The site even as social networking share features and lets you embed your favorite segments:

The Great Debate: netbooks vs. notebooks

Netbooks are one of my favorite gadgets and as their popularity continues to grow a lot of people are wondering which is better: netbooks or notebooks? In reality one isn't necessarily better than the other because they have different functions. A netbook is a companion device that is great for keeping your bag nice and light while you travel but still allow most of the functionality of a regular laptop (among other things), while notebooks have more storage space and are nice for more complex tasks like gaming and creating large documents.

Terra and her netbook

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Terra Reilly, co-founder of Captive Orbit, a digital marketing agency in Seattle, WA.  Terra's one of those amazing people who is accomplished and fun loving, it really was a pleasure to meet with her.  As I've stated before, I'm a little bit of a luddite when it comes to gadget collecting.  While I love working at Intel and seeing new technologies and innovations in process, at home, in my personal life, I don't have a lot of gadgets.  I do have a newer laptop with a Core2 Duo processor at home, but no fancy iPhone or anything in my purse.

However, after meeting Terra, and hearing about how she loves her netbook - and how her netbook sets her free, I am starting to really consider purchasing one of those cute little netbooks I keep walking past at the local store...  Here's her story:

What about you? Have you bought a netbook? Is there a reason why you haven't or won't? Let me know in comments or share your story with us as part of "What's Inside You"!

Compal MID: The Un-Geek Review

Yes, this is my first video blog ever. It literally took me about 3 hours to record just the intro and I finally just said "forget it; I don't care how lame I look!"

The purpose of these videos is to provide the less-geeky folks a review of some really cool technology, starting with a MID (Mobile Internet Device). Since I am only about 50% geek, I will not be taking these gadgets apart, replacing the motherboard or spitting out a bunch of acronyms that I don't understand. Rather, I will talk more about features and usage models; and answer the question of "how will this piece of technology make my life easier". Enjoy.

Anecdotes From GE, Intel Healthcare News

Working in the Intel media relations department often affords me some unique opportunities to sit in with top execs on a number of print, broadcast and online interviews.

In today's case, I spent a lot of time with Paul Otellini and GE Chair and CEO Jeff Immelt. There is a lot of coverage on today's announcement between the two companies, but I thought I'd highlight a few things that stood out from those interviews.

First, a lot of reporters asked how much money Intel and GE would potentially make. In our press release and prepared speaking points, we said the home health care market is about $3 billion today, but could about double by 2012.

The True You?

Yesterday, you likely saw many lies floating around as your visited various online sites.  Personally, I noticed Twitter and Facebook were full of hoaxes and pranks as part of April Fool's Day.  Did you know however that you are likely to see a host of lies today as well?  It's true.  Intel's ethnography group has conducted some research around the idea of when people keep secrets or tell lies in their online world versus their offline world.  Intel found that generally, people feel more comfortable lying or keeping a secret online where social norms are more relaxed than that in the 'real world'.  Specifically, you may be surprised to know that nine out of 10 people lie in their online profiles.  Be honest now. Are you one of the nine?
