Sacramento LANFest 2009 - food, friends and lots of FUN!

I remember attending my first LAN Party back in the mid-90s - a small group of us; maybe 8 to 10 people at a friend's house. We played Quake 2 for about 10 hours... It wasn't so much the game-time that got us together - but it was the food, the friendships and the competition that pumped us up!

Summer Tech Day: Kids, Science and Technology

What do you get when you combine a bunch of kids with Classmates PCs roaming the floor of the California Academy of Sciences?  Technology Chaos. Yes, that describes today's events.

Really though, today was quite an experience.  I spent most of the day with some really awesome youngsters who are way beyond the technology curve of adoption.  The event was hosted by Intel and we invited a bunch of kids and their parents (industry analysts and local bloggers) for some fun in the sun. Well, as usual, it was a tad cloudy in SF but I think you catch my drift, no pun.

Basically, we equipped each kid with a convertible classmate PC and sent them off into the museum to perform several tasks like taking video of fish, snakes and other critters; drawing pictures with their PC and much more. Here is some video and images that highlight today's events.

Kids at Work Day @ Intel

Watch this super cute video of our very own Intel Rockstars and future Sponsors of Tomorrow. These are not actors but the real kids of real Intel employees enjoying their day at the Intel campus in Santa Clara. I hope you enjoy it as much as did.

Old PC Holding You Back?

Laptops are helping more people do more of what they love in more places around the world.

That’s what we learned while collecting stories and footage from the UC Berkeley campus, Malaysia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We mixed those stories with data collected by Intel computer performance engineers.

In this video:

  • HD playing on a new vs. a three-year older laptop
  • Editing high quality video at home or even the beach
  • Recording and mixing music at home, a club or with other DJ live over the Internet
  • A college field hockey coach helping students become well rounded adults with the help of her laptop and digital video camera

Innovation Involves Inclusion -- Traveling Geeks Meet Intel UK

The Traveling Geeks have hit their stride in the UK, where they’ve been meeting with movers and shakers turning to technology innovation as a way for improving start up businesses, education and government agencies.

On Monday, they met with my colleagues Perveen Akhtar and Tristan Wilkinson, Intel’s Public Sector director working to help the UK government leap ahead with its plans to bring better broadband to residents across the country. Here Tristan talks with Intel Insider and Traveling Geek JD Lasica.

What's on Your Bucket List?

The idea of a bucket list was unknown to me before the 2007 film with Jack Nicholson & Morgan Freeman in which a list is created of things they'd like to do before they 'kick the bucket'.  That idea now seems to be everywhere.  Even Kathy Griffin was talking about it in one of her most recent episodes of "My Life on the D List" when Kathy encourages her mother to create a list.  Intel is doing something very similar with Mighty Girl blogger Maggie Mason in which we will sponsor several of her 100 Mighty Life List items over the summer.  Maggie's list was originally developed about a year ago.  At some point, someone at Intel was made aware of this fun list and wanted to get involved (Intel is a Sponsor of Tomorrow you know).  Maggie accepted and the kickoff happened late last week with Maggie crossing off 'Redesign Mighty Girl'.  She's also successfully taken and captured video of her debut in tap dancing

From now through September, Maggie will cross off at least eight more items.  What those eight items will be is a mystery so I'd encourage you to check in often on her progress.  I will say that you'll likely be surprised at what she's doing.  I'll do my best to get photos and videos and post them here too.

What is at the top of your bucket list?  I need to think about mine a little more... perhaps a trip to the Greek Isles?

Traveling Geeks Hit UK with Intel Inside

Sure it’s nice and sunny these days in the San Francisco Bay Area, but almost everyone I know has been bitten by the travel bug.

LondonBridge_TravelingGeeksUK2009

If the UK is one place you’re thinking about, then check out the Traveling Geeks, as dozen bloggers meet technology innovators, startup companies, educators and online networking enthusiasts from London and Cambridge to share best practices for online communication.

The Geeks are in the UK from July 5-11, and Intel is co-sponsoring the trip as an extension of the Intel Insiders program.

Your Personal Wi-Fi Is Ready To Go

IntelĀ® My WiFi Technology creates a Wi-Fi hotspot around your laptop that lets you print, share, sync and show wirelessly at home or on the go. This not your normal wireless connection. With your IntelĀ® My WiFi Personal Area Network (PAN), you can connect Wi-Fi enabled devices (printers, digital cameras, personal media players, and speakers) directly to the laptop without cables or a wireless access point. And as you wirelessly move your digital content between your laptop and devices, your laptop can simultaneously be connected to the Internet via your home or any Wi-Fi network.
