“Its kind of too hard to deal with all at once.” Those were the words of Anya Ayoung-Chee on last Thursday’s Project Runway finale as she commented on showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week and being crowned design winner of Season 9. For me last Thursday—in the night of comebacks, these words rang so true.
As devoted baseball fan, I found myself channel surfing between historic World Series game 6 and the finale episode. Of course both were recording on DVR, right up until my wife wanted to record her favorite show, Greys Anatomy. With two tuners and three shows, something had to give and I ended up recording the finale over the end of the baseball game. Both ended up being classic comebacks with similar storylines.
“Did you ever write this scenario? Did you? No, I know you didn’t,” said Tim Gunn as he congratulated Anya on her victory. Anya just started sewing four months before her audition and almost didn’t make it to the finale because of her less than stellar performance the previous week. It must have felt miraculous to her to actually win the event given that some (including feisty Josh) thought that naming a forth designer to present at Fashion Week was an act of charity by the judges.
Similarly, the St. Louis Cardinal trailed the Atlanta Braves by 10 ½ games on August 25, then won 23 of their last 31 games for their own improbably trip to the finale. Then being down two runs and twice within one strike of losing the World Series, Cardinal’s home town hero third baseman David Freese came through with a monster home run to force a decisive game seven (which the Cardinals won). Ok, I admit it…I only saw Freese rounding second base bacause my remote had toggled over to Runway for a split second.
I have to say the “homer” in me was pulling for Anya because she won the HP Intel technology challenge back in episode 7. Project Runway fans had a similar sentiment as they named Anya “fan favorite” as part of this season series. During Fashion Week, Anya and other designers participated in a Project Runway Reunion and shared their view of the role technology plays in the fashion industry.
So it was an amazing season end for both Project Runway and baseball, how many days until pitchers, catchers and designers report for spring training?
