The holidays are coming... what's on your Intel wish list?

Computers have changed our daily schedule so much in the past few years, and as we slowly creep into the holiday season, what is on top of your holiday list this season?

Do you envision building the baddest of Core i7 gaming rigs? busy-computer.jpg

Summer Tech Day: Kids, Science and Technology

What do you get when you combine a bunch of kids with Classmates PCs roaming the floor of the California Academy of Sciences?  Technology Chaos. Yes, that describes today's events.

Really though, today was quite an experience.  I spent most of the day with some really awesome youngsters who are way beyond the technology curve of adoption.  The event was hosted by Intel and we invited a bunch of kids and their parents (industry analysts and local bloggers) for some fun in the sun. Well, as usual, it was a tad cloudy in SF but I think you catch my drift, no pun.

Basically, we equipped each kid with a convertible classmate PC and sent them off into the museum to perform several tasks like taking video of fish, snakes and other critters; drawing pictures with their PC and much more. Here is some video and images that highlight today's events.

Viliv X70 MID Pre-Orders July 6

Inspired by Inside Scoop Maestro Michael Brito -- he did a great video preview of the Viliv S5 back when the mobile Internet device was about to hit the market -- I got hooked on the solid, nifty Viliv MID design.

Just prior to Computex, my "i gotta have one" device desire was hijacked by the Viliv X70, the slightly bigger, more technically equipped Intel Atom powered) sibling to the Viliv S5.

Computex Watch -- The Skinny on Laptops, New Mobile Devices

Wow, lots of new innovations on being unveiled at Computex in Taipei during the first few days. I’ve been keeping my eyes on a few people there on the scene, and from there branching out to see the reaction from gadget lovers who aren’t at the show (like me).

Gizmodo’s Adrian Covert hit early with “Intel unleashed a flurry of new processors at Computex, including the T9900 Core 2 Duo, which clocks in at a speedy 3.06 GHz—the first Penryn-based Core 2 Duo chip to do so.” and Ubergizmo gave their take, “Intel Makes Mobile More Mobile @ Computex.”

Computex Watch: Mobile Gadgets, Laptops and WiMAX

Many eyes are turning to Taipei for this week’s Computex, the largest IT trade show in Asia that runs from June 2-6.

Every year, this is where new mobile technologies are unveiled, and this year I’m looking for the latest in laptops, netbooks, mobile Internet devices and WiMAX.

Here are a few Intel-related things I’ve seen blogged about prior to the show:

  • New devices by Viliv
  • Metrological’s Mediaconnect TV — the digital entertainment set top box Intel CE 3100 processor inside

Evolution of Mobile Internet Gadgets

This is Moore’s Law in action mixed with the beauty of innovative hardware design and software refinement. Seeing this video is believing in that there has been significant progress in the past three years, as more tech experts work together at bringing the full Internet experience to tiny mobile Internet devices.

Steve “Chippy” Paine at UMPCPortal.com always puts things into a clear, easily understandable perspective for people interested in the latest tiny computers hitting markets around the world.

In this video, he show how some of the first Utra Mobile Personal Computers (UMPC) looked, felt and operated back in 2006 then compares them to newer, better built mobile Internet devices on the market today.

Viliv MID taking Pre Orders Today!

Ya'll know me by now. I usually don't spout out marketing messages on this blog but consider this one exception. I had the Viliv MID (review below) over the weekend and I fell in love with it; mainly because I was able to download and use Tweetdeck, something that failed to work on previous devices.

So here is the marketing message. Starting today (April 27th @ 1:00 PM EST), Dynamism is accepting pre-orders for $599, with the first orders expected to ship on May 8th. And, as an added incentive, those who pre-order will also get a spare battery, a car kit, and a leather pouch, which Dynamism says is a $135 value.

Where do you want the Internet?

On CNN this morning, there's an article about Nettops, another internet device powered by the Intel Atom processor.  In my previous posts, I've talked about wanting a stylish little netbook - to carry around in my purse.  But now, I'm kinda starting to think that I want a nettop on my kitchen counter too.  True, I could use the netbook in the kitchen, but I kinda like the idea of having an unmoveable internet device on my countertop.  It could be the recipe organizer and family calendar and it wouldn't get lost in the house!  I surfed around a little bit and found a touchscreen version of the nettop that would fit the bill just perfectly on Amazon.com:

The Great Debate: netbooks vs. notebooks

Netbooks are one of my favorite gadgets and as their popularity continues to grow a lot of people are wondering which is better: netbooks or notebooks? In reality one isn't necessarily better than the other because they have different functions. A netbook is a companion device that is great for keeping your bag nice and light while you travel but still allow most of the functionality of a regular laptop (among other things), while notebooks have more storage space and are nice for more complex tasks like gaming and creating large documents.

Compal MID: The Un-Geek Review

Yes, this is my first video blog ever. It literally took me about 3 hours to record just the intro and I finally just said "forget it; I don't care how lame I look!"

The purpose of these videos is to provide the less-geeky folks a review of some really cool technology, starting with a MID (Mobile Internet Device). Since I am only about 50% geek, I will not be taking these gadgets apart, replacing the motherboard or spitting out a bunch of acronyms that I don't understand. Rather, I will talk more about features and usage models; and answer the question of "how will this piece of technology make my life easier". Enjoy.

Netbooks vs Laptops

SmartMoney published a great play on the PC vs Mac series to showcase the differences between Netbooks and Laptops on YouTube a while back...

To help you better understand the differences, Intel published a quick cheat sheet comparing the two products... Hope this is helpful!

Intel's Netbook vs Laptop Primer

Chris Brogan interacts with a MID @ SxSW

Check out Brogan's review of MIDS (Mobile Internet Devices) at SXSW 2009. He's hangin' with Intel friends Bryan Rhoads, Jeff Moriarty, and Steve "Chippy" Paine from MIDMoves.com. Filmed by the man, the myth, the legend, Ken Kaplan.  My favorite quote ... "You can fit this in your pocket; it's like a wrench."

Showcasing MIDS at Mobile World Congress

Intel will be showcasing a breadth of MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) in its booth at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 16 - 19. The range of devices on display will demonstrate how Intel is helping to unleash the Internet across multiple devices and form factors. Meet Rama as she talks about the MIDs on display at the show. She works in marketing for Intel and also contributes to the Inside Scoop!

If you are attending the show, be sure to stop by the booth to say hi!  I won't be there, unfortunately, but my esteemed colleagues will be sure to treat you kindly.

4 reasons why Netbooks are good for the industry

There has been a lot of conversation that netbooks are cannibalizing notebook sales; and I can understand why. I really don't know which side of the fence I sit on but I ran across this post from Mike Elgan, Columnist at Computer World who argues that overall, netbooks are good for the market. In his words:

  • The economic meltdown. People aren't buying anything nowadays. Car sales are down.
  • Luxury goods of all types are in the toilet. Desktop PCs are particularly vulnerable because most people already own functioning systems, and consider upgrading simply for better performance to be a needless and costly luxury. A long-running trend from desktops to notebooks. As notebooks have increased in power and declined in price over the past decade, their relative sales have risen compared with desktops.
  • Windows 7. Microsoft has been far more vocal about Windows 7, and many people are waiting for it now.
  • A lack of innovation generally. Desktop PCs are the least innovative areas of consumer technology. For the average user, literally nothing compelling has happened in the desktop PC space since flat-screen LCDs. One WIRED blog suggests that netbooks are "killing PC innovation." I think the opposite is true. I think PC vendors aren't innovating, and that's contributing to the general public apathy toward PCs.
