They were armed only with background on Ultrabook devices and an ASUS UX31 Ultrabook. Then they were given 5 days to independently develop their own videos, and they all delivered in bringing new ideas, thinking and perspectives to the table.

Anthony Bui – a writer and director that specializes in commercials, music videos, narrative — took an approach to bring the viewer into his story with some fantastic graphics and great cinematography. See the video here. The team at Mischievous Studios lived up to their name by stirring up some innocent hijinks at CES with a lovable, yet slightly detached character, Doug Digz. Check out the videos here and here. And Mu Sun took a twist on the Ultrabook by fusing some cultural hot points and CES humor to bring his “Occupy” themed video to life. Check out the video here.

Enjoy and please let us know what you think.

Visual Wonders Winners http://scoop.intel.com/visual-wonders-winners/ http://scoop.intel.com/visual-wonders-winners/#comments Tue, 30 Aug 2011 08:39:48 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=3589 Read more >]]> Recently, Intel embarked on a quest to document the most visually stunning places across the globe. Since we launched the Visual Life campaign earlier this year, discussing how the new 2nd generation of Intel® CoreTM processors create a visually stunning experiences for consumers, I’ve been paying much more attention to the beauty around me. Like the film says, we really do experience life visually.

The Visual Wonders of the World sweepstakes recently concluded and if you are like me, I’m sure you’re curious what locations took top honors. My vote was for the Na Pali Coast in Hawaii but what did the rest of the world say? Here’s a rundown on the top seven locations chosen by voters worldwide:
1. Amsterdam
2. Cape Town
3. Buda Castle
4. Taj Mahal
5. Sheikh Zayad Mosque
6. Rome
7. Stonehenge

In the United States, the Grand Canyon, Golden Gate Bridge and New York City skyline took the top three spots in voting. As a whole however, voters in the U.S. preferred natural settings, such as Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon over more urban settings. Who says we work too hard and don’t take time to stop and enjoy nature around us?
Intel’s Visual Wonders of the World sweepstakes was an affirmation that images and the ways we can share them play a major role in our lives. From the places we visit, to the people we know, to the things that inspire us our sense of the visual is a major dynamic that shapes our very being.

So after seeing the top locations listed here, are there any others that you think should have crept to the top spot? I would love to hear about them.

My Visual Life http://scoop.intel.com/my-visual-life/ http://scoop.intel.com/my-visual-life/#comments Wed, 19 Jan 2011 10:13:26 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=1319 Read more >]]> The dust has settled from CES a bit and I now have time to reflect on the madness. It was madness – it was brilliant madness and I’m just so amazed at all the cool stuff I got to see and do. Of course, working at Intel we were able to show of the new 2nd Generator Core processors. For the average Jane (like myself), I often wonder about a new computer. And for the record, I personally DO need a new computer. I’ve been publicly complaining about it for almost a year now I think. Mine is dying a slow death. A horrible, horrible death.. but I digress. So the point here is that I think it’s my time to buy. I am a blogging, photo taking, video editing fool. I’m not good at any of it but I do well enough to document memories of my kids. I have most of it all private on YouTube, etc but imagine videos from the rodeo and my 5 year old’s first basketball game (it’s hysterical but again I digress). So you could easily say that I live a ‘visual life’. And therefore, I need a computer that can keep up.

So you might be asking what does the new 2nd Gen Core system do for me? Here are a couple things I’m most excited about. 1 – it’s ‘visibly smart’ meaning Intel put the visual and graphics onto the processor. This just works better and is more responsive when you are doing things such as watching HD videos, viewing photos, etc. 2 – your battery life won’t suffer. This is cool because the new chips are more efficient and enable longer battery life. Cool, right! 3 – something called Intel Quick Sync. This is the real amazing piece as for example – a four-minute HD video can now convert a PC file to transfer to an iPod in just 16 seconds that same video use to take 4 minutes.

So how do you get in the action? One cool way is with our Visual Life contest (in the U.S.). Just submit videos or photos for your chance to win new 2nd Gen Core systems from HP! You can find that here: http://www.intel.com/visuallife. And while you are there, check out how blogger Scott Schuman, aka “The Sartorialist,” lives his visual life. Brilliant, right! Enjoy!

Hourglass Syndrome: Do You Suffer? http://scoop.intel.com/hourglass_syndrome_do_you_suffer/ http://scoop.intel.com/hourglass_syndrome_do_you_suffer/#comments Wed, 31 Mar 2010 12:57:29 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=340 Read more >]]> If you are like me, you hate waiting. Whether it’s waiting in line for a coffee or on hold waiting for a real person to pick up after endless cycles through an automated phone system, it’s just frustrating. One area in particular that waiting really gets to me is when my computer just doesn’t keep up with me. It’s those moments of watching that little hourglass spin while a program opens or a Web site loads when I feel like pulling my hair out! To help illustrate the frustration levels of waiting for technology, we put together this fun video that outlines what we’re calling ‘Hourglass Syndrome’. Do you suffer? I know I certainly have! And April is National Stress Awareness Month so really, we’re just doing our part in hopes of helping to alleviate the stressors in life and offer some solutions to the waiting game.

As a company, Intel commissioned some research that found performance is the number one pain point for consumers, especially when it comes to the speed of performance and their processor. We also asked Harris Interactive to help us find out how much people are waiting and found that the average computer user spends about 13 minutes per day waiting for their technology to catch up to them, which equates to up to 3 days a year just waiting. And waiting. It surprised no one that the same study found that 66% of computer users said they are at least somewhat stressed when waiting for their computer.

For me, the solution tech-wise at least is with the new Core processors. By launching the new 2010 Intel Core family of smart processors, Intel is tackling the dreaded Hourglass head-on and helping to reduce the wait. The new Intel processors use Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, automatically adapting to an individual’s performance needs, providing a boost when you need to speed and conserving power when you don’t – reducing the wait for some users. In fact, the Intel® Coreâ„¢ i5 processors are about twice as fast as three-year old PCs for video, photo and music downloading experience.

So what are you doing to eliminate the wait in your life? We invite you to take a short (fun) quiz on the Intel Facebook fan page and keep the conversation going. You’ll also be entered to win an Intel-powered Wireless Display laptop by doing so (on the Win a Laptop tab).

Why the AppUp Center is Great for Moms http://scoop.intel.com/why_the_appup_center_is_great_for_moms/ http://scoop.intel.com/why_the_appup_center_is_great_for_moms/#comments Mon, 18 Jan 2010 11:15:59 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=309 Read more >]]> Curious what moms are looking for in their tech lives? Look no further. Founder and chief technology mom at TheOnlineMom, Monica Vila spoke briefly to Intel about technology, specifically netbooks and how she’s keeping home and life organized, simplified and entertaining with the use of the new AppUp Center from Intel.

At a high level, Monica discusses the usefulness of a netbook to moms and the benefits of using the AppUp Store in lieu of downloading large programs or software that could slow you down. I couldn’t agree more with her recommendations. As a working mom myself, I’m often trying to find ways to keep the kids occupied while I’m getting dinner together for example. A fun and educational game on a netbook is a great solution and has worked at my house. Other things Monica will be looking to the AppUp Center for are record keeping, messaging, time-savers and entertaining applications.

In case you haven’t checked out the AppUp Center, it’s essentially a hub for applications built specifically for Intel Atom processor-based netbook computers (of which there have been 40 million + sold to date). So there are a lot of netbooks out there that will be benefiting from this storefront. Intel’s Ken Kaplan wrote up a great overview that can be found here.

What are you hoping to find at the AppUp Center

I can name several friends and family members who are passionate about one cause or another and I’m excited to announce here that Intel is going to give one nonprofit the chance to bring quite a bit of attention to themselves. A recently launched program called ‘Vote for a Cause’ which is underway on Facebook allows people to nominate and vote for their favorite nonprofit organization for a chance to win up to $50,000 in advertising with Intel. Think what $50K could do to help illuminate your cause and bring nationwide attention to it! Amazing.

All you need to do right now, is nominate on the Vote for a Cause page on Facebook. Then, in a few days, the voting will start and you’ll have your chance to influence the decision. When I last checked there were over 100 entries so far, and that was only after the site had been live for a day or so.

So hop on, become a fan, nominate your cause or just start watching. I’m confident some amazing things are going to happen in just a few short weeks.

What’s on Your Bucket List? http://scoop.intel.com/whats_on_your_bucket_list/ http://scoop.intel.com/whats_on_your_bucket_list/#comments Mon, 06 Jul 2009 12:34:10 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=216 Read more >]]> The idea of a bucket list was unknown to me before the 2007 film with Jack Nicholson & Morgan Freeman in which a list is created of things they’d like to do before they ‘kick the bucket’. That idea now seems to be everywhere. Even Kathy Griffin was talking about it in one of her most recent episodes of “My Life on the D List” when Kathy encourages her mother to create a list. Intel is doing something very similar with Mighty Girl blogger Maggie Mason in which we will sponsor several of her 100 Mighty Life List items over the summer. Maggie’s list was originally developed about a year ago. At some point, someone at Intel was made aware of this fun list and wanted to get involved (Intel is a Sponsor of Tomorrow you know). Maggie accepted and the kickoff happened late last week with Maggie crossing off ‘Redesign Mighty Girl’. She’s also successfully taken and captured video of her debut in tap dancing

From now through September, Maggie will cross off at least eight more items. What those eight items will be is a mystery so I’d encourage you to check in often on her progress. I will say that you’ll likely be surprised at what she’s doing. I’ll do my best to get photos and videos and post them here too.

What is at the top of your bucket list? I need to think about mine a little more… perhaps a trip to the Greek Isles?

The True You? http://scoop.intel.com/the_true_you/ http://scoop.intel.com/the_true_you/#comments Thu, 02 Apr 2009 08:46:23 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=177 Read more >]]> Yesterday, you likely saw many lies floating around as your visited various online sites. Personally, I noticed Twitter and Facebook were full of hoaxes and pranks as part of April Fool’s Day. Did you know however that you are likely to see a host of lies today as well? It’s true. Intel’s ethnography group has conducted some research around the idea of when people keep secrets or tell lies in their online world versus their offline world. Intel found that generally, people feel more comfortable lying or keeping a secret online where social norms are more relaxed than that in the ‘real world’. Specifically, you may be surprised to know that nine out of 10 people lie in their online profiles. Be honest now. Are you one of the nine?

As technology is developed, it’s important to understand people’s behaviors. For example, if you know that people lie about their age online you might not include birthdays as part of a security question for an online log in. Furthermore, as technology is developed around TV viewing preferences it’s important to understand if people are telling the truth about what they are watching – whether it’s Dancing with the Stars or Nova.

Don Clark of the WSJ wrote up a great piece about this very subject here.

 • My manufacturing employees who spend their days inside the “fab” – or factory – refer to the rest of my employees as “carpet-dwellers.”
 • My factories reclaim more than 3 billion gallons of water each year, and I am the largest purchaser of green power in the U.S. according to the EPA.

Remember the Internet of ’96? http://scoop.intel.com/remember_the_internet_of_96/ http://scoop.intel.com/remember_the_internet_of_96/#comments Thu, 26 Feb 2009 10:28:46 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=154 Read more >]]> 1996 was the year I got my first cell phone. Back then, you could have never accused me of being an early tech adopter. An article by Farhad Manjoo of Slate.com yesterday really brought back some memories for me and therefore thought I’d share here. Do you remember the Internet you likely paid for in hour-by-hour increments? Or the sound of the dial up modem and how long it took for each page to load?. Forget video or algorithmic search engines, they didn’t exist. Manjoo captures the who era so well here.

At Intel, we’ve been doing some comparisons of computers that are 3-4 years old to those of today that are sporting wicked fast processers. In contrast to what is available today, PCs from three years ago are starting to become more and more archaic. In the last four years, Youtube launched, Facebook extended beyond its college audience focus, HD video was made possible and VOIP has become more mainstream. We know that approximately one-third of computers in use today are more than three years old, and of those, most are desktops. With the mobile possibilities available and the advancements in technology I personally hope you aren’t one of those who are fumbling around with an old machine and the poor performance that likely goes with it.

Enjoy reminiscing about the old days and relishing in how far we’ve come in such an incredible short amount of time.

Old or Young – Who is Online in 2009? http://scoop.intel.com/old_or_young_-_who_is_online_in_2009/ http://scoop.intel.com/old_or_young_-_who_is_online_in_2009/#comments Thu, 29 Jan 2009 13:28:59 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=129 Read more >]]> A report was issued this week from Pew Internet & American Life Project that details the generational differences of those online. A bit surprising (to me at least), generation Y (aka millennials) do not dominate every aspect of online activities. According to Pew, ”Generation X is the most likely group to bank, shop, and look for health information online. Boomers are just as likely as Generation Y to make travel reservations online. And even Silent Generation internet users are competitive when it comes to email (although teens might point out that this is proof that email is for old people).”

The study is well worth a quick look. At a high level it seems that younger generations use the Internet for entertainment and social activities while older generations use it as a tool for shopping, banking and research. Both older and younger peruse the net for viewing videos, travel booking and job research. Lastly, broadband usage has increased by almost half for those between 12-24, it’s doubled for those between 25-64 and has TRIPLED for those 65 and older. Fantastic!

It would have been interesting to understand the level of mobile usage between the generations. With 1 in 10 consumers now owning a netbook, and with notebook sales now surpassing desktop, I’d imagine we’d see all generations going mobile. I just wonder where the breakdowns would lie.

The Small Things Challenge: Micro Efforts with Macro Effects http://scoop.intel.com/small-things-challenge-micro_efforts_with_macro_effects/ http://scoop.intel.com/small-things-challenge-micro_efforts_with_macro_effects/#comments Fri, 09 Jan 2009 15:57:17 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=105 Read more >]]> Do you live on less than $10 a day? Think about that. Do you get all of your food, shelter, everything for less than $10 a day? I doubt it. But that is the reality for more than 80% of the world’s population. Additionally, over 75 million school-age children do not have the opportunity to go to school. This cycle of economic suffering simply won’t end unless we decide to take a stand and step in to help. Intel is teaming with Kiva.org and Save the Children in an effort to eradicate poverty and help achieve universal primary education.
So what can you do? You can visit The Small Things Challenge. Just by visiting, Intel will donate $.05 on your behalf. If you want to do more however, you can donate to Kiva.org or Save the Children. Help us take something small, and turn it into something big.

WiMAX Anticipation High in Portland http://scoop.intel.com/wimax_anticipation_high_in_portland/ http://scoop.intel.com/wimax_anticipation_high_in_portland/#comments Tue, 06 Jan 2009 09:56:39 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=88 Read more >]]> I’m writing from the Portland launch of WiMAX using a WiMAX enabled notebook from Lenovo. The real story here is around making wireless fast, affordable and accessible – everywhere. You’d think this is simple enough but it’s really quite complicated. Thankfully, Clear and Intel together have achieved giving Portland the fastest wireless in the west.

So what is WiMAX anyways? It’s essentially a giant hotspot over an entire market. In this case, Portland. Coverage extends as far west as Forest Grove, as far north as Clark County/Battle Ground, Wash. to Gresham/Troutdale in the east and south to Wilsonville. You could stream a movie for the kids in the back seat while traveling all over town. Get lost? Just open your notebook and hit up an online mapping site. No more worrying about trying to find a coffee shop or bookstore with WiFi because WiMAX is everywhere! We also had the treat of a video chat with Portland Mayor Sam Adams. Check out a couple photos from the event.

And the Emmy goes to…. INTEL! http://scoop.intel.com/and_the_emmy_goes_to_intel/ http://scoop.intel.com/and_the_emmy_goes_to_intel/#comments Thu, 18 Dec 2008 08:41:48 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=81 Read more >]]> The help in development of the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) has won Intel an Emmy. That’s right, Intel, along with several other companies, will be awarded an Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences as this years Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 7. The achievement recognizes Intel and others for development and wide spread adoption of HDMI, which provides the digital connection between HD TVs and other consumer electronic devices such as set top boxes, DVD and Blu-ray media players allowing for superior home viewing experiences. Additionally, Intel worked to meet the needs of the content creation community through its development of High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) which protects the content rights during transmission from a source device to a display device. To date, over a billion HDMI/HDCP interfaces are in use today worldwide. The National Television Academy’s website offers a bit more information.
Seriously. Yes, I said an Emmy!

Do you use Daylight Savings as a reminder for anything techy? http://scoop.intel.com/do_you_use_daylight_savings_as_a_reminder_for_anything_techy/ http://scoop.intel.com/do_you_use_daylight_savings_as_a_reminder_for_anything_techy/#comments Wed, 29 Oct 2008 11:45:21 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=37 Read more >]]> I personally use it as a reminder for a couple things. First, there is of course the smoke-alarm battery update. Can’t ignore that one. But it’s also the time I check my computer’s health. I know, it’s kind of geeky to think that way, but ignoring it leads to a slow and sluggish machine. I have a mini checklist (see below) for optimal processor performance (yes, I work for Intel. Yes, I’m a processor geek).

1 – Empty the recycle bin. This one is the easiest.
2 – Delete your temporary files. Get rid of all those un-necessary files.
3 – Check for viruses and spyware. Be sure your anti-virus/anti-spyware software is turned on and working.
4 – Uninstall un-used programs. Loading up your hard drive can slow down a system. I swear, I just found a dial-up program on my machine! Random.. but it’s now gone!
5 – Defrag your hard drive. Over time, the files on your hard drive get broken into pieces, making them harder to retrieve and update.

Oh, and while this isn’t to necessarily get your computer moving faster, it will give you peace of mind. I also back up my files. I do this more often than twice per year.. but sometimes I slip. We’re all busy, right!

What do you do?

CBS’s Social Viewing Room takes the experience to the next level by enabling viewers to interact with their friends online creating a very compelling new social media tool. Now, the PC can start to replicate the traditional living room experience but in a virtual space – enabling the PC viewer to banter, laugh and comment with the power of Intel microprocessors.”

When it comes to cutting-edge technology and improving people’s lives, Intel always seems to be in the middle. I’m behind on NCIS so will be checking it out later today – anyone want to join me?
