“Knowledge is power.”

I attended the Girl Rising documentary film this past weekend directed by Richard E. Robins, a moving and inspirational film that highlighted the lives of young girls around the world. The film captured the innocence gained and lost yet the perseverance that each one endured to overcome their circumstances.

The film features voice over from Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchet, Selena Gomez, Liam Neeson, Priyanka Chopra, Chloe Moretz, Freida Pinto, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Alicia Keyes and Kerry Washington.

It’s a film that highlights the journey of 9 wonderful young girls: Ruksana the Dreamer, Suma the Emancipated, Yasmin the Defender, Senna the Warrior, Azmera the Courageous, Amina the Hopeful, Wadley the Undaunted, Mariama the Catalyst.

This movie work is fabulous, with vibrant colors and intertwined animations to illustrate the stories of challenges and success for each one of these young women. Exposing both the beauty of each one and the dark obstacles each one has faced.

In other parts of the world the reality for young, poor girls is a fate expected to work, fetch water and care for children with many culture norms it is typical to send off their young women to work for others because they cannot afford school costs. If they can afford it, many send the boys in the family and the girls have to work, or married off.

In many developing cases up to 75% of AIDs cases are girls or women. In some places the #1 death of girls or young women between the age of 15 and 19 years old is child bearing.

The documentary movie assigned a writer to each of the young women’s personal story. From Ruksana from India to Senna in Peru, each story follows the triumph and strife these young women have lived. It’s main message, girls that get educated grow in better living situations, having the ability to care for themselves and t heir family and making a difference not only in their own life, but community and country.

With the support of 10×0, Intel sponsored the movie, along with CNN films. It’s a tribute to young women around the world. Please visit intel.com/women and review an interesting report on the digital divide, take action and host a screening or text 55155 to donate.

#Sundance 2013: How @Intel Aims to Change the World Through Film http://scoop.intel.com/sundance-2013-how-intel-aims-to-change-the-world-through-film/ http://scoop.intel.com/sundance-2013-how-intel-aims-to-change-the-world-through-film/#comments Thu, 24 Jan 2013 17:26:41 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=10435 Read more >]]> This is a guest post by Shanna Cook, Intel Social Media Strategist.

We’re simply setting out to “change minds, change lives, and change policy” with film. These lofty goals are what film director Richard Robbins shared during Monday’s panel hosted by Intel on “Creating Social Change with Film at the Center” at Sundance Film Festival.

The worldwide premiere of the trailer for Girl Rising, an innovative documentary that is the result of a collaboration between Intel, The Documentary Group, Vulcan, and CNN Films, was held during the noontime panel. They say hindsight vision is 20/20, and looking back now, when we were planning our presence at Sundance this year we should have included a line item in the budget for Kleenex. There were definitely tears in the audience as we watched the inspirational trailer and learned about the filmmaking process and evolution of Girl Rising.

That evening, Intel held a salon during which renowned actress, Freida Pinto, introduced the film by sharing some moving facts about education worldwide: there are 66 million girls who are not in school; 14 million girls under the age of 18 will be married this year alone; and 150 million girls are victims of sexual violence each year. While the statistics may seem daunting, Pinto perfectly summarized the optimistic and empowered mood of the audience that night- “there is so much hope in the world if you just look for it.”

Through Girl Rising, we hope to do more than just spread awareness– we aim to change the state of girls education worldwide. Pinto was joined by a cast of other notable speakers: Edwidge Danticat, award-winning author and writer of the film chapter on Haiti; Holly Gordon, Executive Director of Girl Rising; and Shelly Esque, Intel VP of Corporate Affairs; who moved the audience on to action by saying “If you educate girls, you will change the world.”

Girl Rising is gathering a lot of support from the thespian community, and is narrated by Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Alicia Keys, Cate Blanchett, Kerry Washington, Selena Gomez, Priyanka Chopra, Chloë Moretz, Freida Pinto, and Liam Neeson.

We believe that Girl Rising is a documentary like no other. It is a call to action. As such, we have partnered with Gathr, an innovative new model for theatrical distribution that puts film screenings in the hands of the audience. We hope in doing so, people will be motivated watch the film as a community and make Girl Rising into a true social action movement. Girl Rising makes its theatrical debut on March 6, 2013,in New York City and through Gathr, you can request a screening in a theater in your local community.

Now is the time. The stories of the nine girls profiled in the film are real, written by notable authors from the countries the girls are from, and will inspire you to rise up and take action. What does your education mean to you? What would your life be like if you had not gone to school?

“Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached the 20,000 ft cruising altitude you may now start writing your blog.” Ok, so maybe the pilot did not say that last part, but that is what I wanted to hear, to get the buzz out and I’ll be giving you an all access pass to everything Intel at Sundance Film Festival!

Intel has been a corporate sponsor of Sundance for quite a few years now, but this year we have something very special to share with you – the worldwide premiere of the Girl Rising documentary trailer! Intel is a founding corporate sponsor of 10×10, a social action campaign to raise awareness of the importance and value of educating girls worldwide. The cornerstone of the campaign is Girl Rising, a documentary that uses powerful storytelling to tell the stories of girls across several countries as they fight for access to education.

The worldwide premiere of the film trailer will be held at Sundance on Monday, January 21st. There will also be a panel discussion that morning on how film can be used to jump start social change campaigns featuring Shelly Esque, Intel’s VP of Legal and Corporate Affairs, and speakers from our partners at 10×10, Vulcan Productions, Gathr, and the United Nations Foundation. While not everyone can attend in person, I’ll be giving you an all access pass to everything Intel and Girl Rising at Sundance. Follow along on Twitter at @IntelInvolved as I post updates from the panels and events, take a walk down Main Street with me in my video diary series, and see how many celebrities I can accidentally bump in to… (So far my running count is one, but it was a big one!).

It’s been a culmination of excitement to be heading to Sundance and it’s been over 2 years that I have heard rumblings about this film. I can’t wait to share the trailer with you on Tuesday, but in the meantime you can check out the teaser at spr.ly/GirlRisingTeaser. Trust me, the full trailer will give you goose bumps (and not just because the nighttime low tonight is 1 degree Fahrenheit).

Climbing high for clean water! http://scoop.intel.com/climbing-high-for-clean-water/ http://scoop.intel.com/climbing-high-for-clean-water/#comments Fri, 11 Jan 2013 15:55:43 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=10350 Read more >]]> This is a guest post by Intel’s Mark Vaiciulis.

A group of culture influencers including Justin Chatwin, Mark Foster, Beau Garrett, Chase Jarvis and Bryn Mooser join Grammy-nominated singer and philanthropist Kenna, educators and other partners for a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro for an initiative called Summit on the Summit 2 (SOTS2). I’m climbing on behalf of Intel.

The objective of SOTS2 is to create awareness for the global clean water crises and drive change. This crises is staggering – more than 780 million people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water, and more than 3.5 million people die each year from water-related diseases.

As “sponsors of tomorrow,” Intel believes that its technology helps make the world a better place and can improve the lives of people everywhere. This is why it is participating as a corporate sponsor of SOTS2. (Intel also helped sponsor the initial climb in 2010).

Intel and HP are contributing a range of UltrabooksTM and computer devises that are being used as a “voice from the mountain” to help communicate and educate people on this crises. This includes climbers posting updates through social media channels, summitonthesummit.com – including on anline summit seeker community, and a full blown Intel powered production tent that is capturing and distributing content about the crises and the climb.

It’s been an educational and inspiring journey. Upon arrival, we visited the Maswakini village where clean water is a daily matter of survival. We learned through Dr. Greg Allwood how P&G is the community by providing clean water sachets that can make dirty water drinkable in about 20 minutes. I was personally touched by the children of the community who smiled constantly, laughed and played absent of material passions and despite their living condition.

We are day 2 into a 7 day climb, Im writing this blog at 11,500’ with an amazing view of the tallest mountain in Africa (19,341’). It’s been a fantastic and challenging experience and the team seems destined to summit in the name of clean water.

Samsung Tablet – Making Spirits Cheery and Bright! http://scoop.intel.com/samsung-tablet-making-spirits-cheery-and-bright/ http://scoop.intel.com/samsung-tablet-making-spirits-cheery-and-bright/#comments Tue, 18 Dec 2012 17:55:36 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=10244 Read more >]]> Travels of Samsung ATIV. #IntelTablets. A guest post by Ward Johnson at Intel.

I was born October 26th, 2012 in China , at a Samsung factory at only 1.5 lbs and 12 inches. Back then all I can remember were very bright lights, people seemingly running all around me, and the noise, it never ended, just a constant rumble coming from the factory 24 hours a day.

Shortly thereafter I was packed up with thousands of my siblings and put on an airplane for what felt like a lifetime. It wasn’t until the plane landed that I realized we were in a completely different part of the world. A US Customs Agent was opening boxes, checking something off on paperwork as he went through the entire pallet. I felt luckier than some of my brothers and sisters where that man with Customs broke open the factory seals, poking at this and that inside. My seal was still intact and from everything I’ve heard that is very important once I get to my new owner.

It’s now December, 2012 and the big day is finally here. I’ve been moved from one truck to another, carried by at least ten different people, pushed, bumped, and even dropped from about two feet, but I’m in perfect condition and ready for my new home. I’ll never forget being handed to Ward Johnson, a Manager at Intel. I could tell right away there was going to be a wonderful adventure ahead.

Fortunately for me (and very unlike Ward), when he opened me up and unpacked everything, he read the quick start manual before turning me on. This is important because Samsung does not provide us food before we start our journey, they say it’s done for safety reasons, but I’ve never known any of my siblings to do anything without their owner’s commands or direction.

There is nothing better than your first full charge in life.

My brain is the best out there, and I know it. Some call it Atom Z2760, but I know it as incredibly smart and fast, that’s me. I’ve been totally optimized for Windows 8 and can run both new applications as well as some of my owner’s old ones (he really needs to let go of some of those, Pong is so outdated). And for the fashion oriented, I’m very slim, lightweight and ‘Mystic Blue’ and Ward used a picture of his prized Bonsai plants to customize my background. I will say it pleased me when Chrome became Ward’s browser of choice; it’s one of the best and works perfect on my platform. He also downloaded DropBox, it’s a free app that allows him to store and share files across all his devises and it even allows family and friends to view what he wants to share. DropBox is great when it comes to saving space on my hard drive.

Now I go almost everywhere with my new owner. And he is very proud of me; there isn’t a day that goes by where I’m not the focal point of multiple high energy conversations. I have to tell you, just seeing his face light up and the smiles I bring to him and his friends every time he pulls me out of his backpack. I don’t see why he has to also carry that other, older and might I say kind-of fat laptop thing too, but I get all the excitement when I’m brought out, and works just fine for me.

I’ve now been to three states, two face to face meetings (whatever those are), the Washington County Grand Jury, several dinner parties and one of my more memorable ones, getting to meet his neighbors, but most importantly their kids, whom magnetically latched on to me, and who could so gracefully navigate across my applications. Don’t get me wrong, Ward really likes Skype, the camera, Facebook and others, but I really like all the uninhibited enthusiasm from the kids when they play my on-board games.

It’s been just over one week since my first charge in life. To think that I’ve done all I have so far, and been seen by so many people in so many different places, all on one charge.

This weekend I get to be a recipe book, and help Ward make his annual holiday Chex-mix. I’ll make sure he takes some pictures and gets them posted to Facebook, I only wish I could share the smell s with you, maybe a future enhancement suggestion I’ll send to Samsung.

And today is #TabletTipTuesday, a link on how to create a picture password. #IntelTablets

FYI, FYO PhotoFun is a Cool App That Helps Organize Your Facebook Photos http://scoop.intel.com/fyi-fyo-photofun-is-a-cool-app-that-helps-to-organize-your-facebook-photos/ http://scoop.intel.com/fyi-fyo-photofun-is-a-cool-app-that-helps-to-organize-your-facebook-photos/#comments Mon, 10 Dec 2012 18:50:00 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=10217 Read more >]]> This is a guest post by Patrick DeFreitas with the Intel AppUp® center.

Point, shoot, delete. Point, shoot, delete. Point, shoot, yay! Taking pictures for Facebook is a delicate art. It’s one part glamour shot, one part irreverence: I don’t really care that I’m taking my own picture. After you’ve captured (or recaptured) the moment, you post it to Facebook and wait for the likes to roll in. But after a few hours, your perfect phone pic is pushed down to the bottom of top news.

So how can we have more fun with Facebook photos? Gautam Goradia, CEO and founder of Hayagriva Software, and his team have found a way to make the Facebook photo experience more dynamic with their series of apps, fYO PhotoFun. fYO, which stands for “Your Own for Facebook,” gives Facebook users a way to manage all of the pictures they and their friends are taking. Features include viewing all of your friends’ albums on one page, searching Facebook for public photos and downloading an entire Facebook album onto your computer with just one click. It also amps up the photos on Facebook by converting them into games, and allowing users to create photo collages.

With more than 250 million photos shared on Facebook daily, the team at Hayagriva sensed an opportunity to not only allow Facebook users a way to organize all of these photos, but also to have a little fun doing it. “We called it ‘Your Own (YO) Facebook’ because we wanted people to be able to create their own Facebook experience,” said Mr. Goradia.

For Hayagriva, the first step to creating a more personalized Facebook experience was to help people manage their data smartly. After that, Mr. Goradia says, “We created a clutter-free environment so the user can look at pictures from their friends and recommend pictures to others easily.”

Thanks to advances in the Ultrabook™, Hayagriva is now working with Intel to build more touch enablement into its apps. “The Ultrabook opens up touch and gesture control to developers. All of these advances will improve apps and the user experience in the short term and in the long term,” said Mr. Goradia.

If you’re ready to manage your Facebook photo experience better, and have a bit of fun doing it, download the two fYO PhotoFun Facebook apps from the Intel AppUp® center. fYO PhotoFun Dance and Games-Plus* lets you discover photo albums on Facebook easily, and converts them into a dancing slideshow, and three mind games. The more advanced version, fYO PhotoFun Home – Plus, lets you do a lot more with photos, like download an album to your computer easily, and creating photo collages.

The other series introduced by Hayagriva, is the fYO Posts Archiver series, which allows users to save important Facebook posts to their computers by subject, thereby ensuring that users never lose an important Facebook post. fYO Posts Archiver which comes in two versions, allows users to search Facebook public posts and archive them to their computers.

Download fYO Posts Archiver Home – Plus and fYO Posts Archiver Premium – Plus from the Intel AppUp center.

Four Myths around Windows 8 Tablets http://scoop.intel.com/four-myths-around-windows-8-tablets/ http://scoop.intel.com/four-myths-around-windows-8-tablets/#comments Thu, 08 Nov 2012 20:36:01 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9959 Read more >]]> This is a guest post by the Tablet Guy, @IntelTabletGuy

Last week we saw the much anticipated launch of Windows 8, and consequently we finally get to see an amazing array of tablet, PC, and Ultrabook devices from Intel, our OEM partners, and Microsoft come to market.

But amidst all of the excitement, it’s fair to say that there is a degree of confusion among consumers. I’m constantly bombarded with question such as: What’s the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8? Do I have to sacrifice battery life and pay more to run the full version of Windows 8 on Intel architecture? So in what will likely be the first of a series of posts, I’d like to take a minute to answer some of these questions and dispel some commonly held myths in the industry.

Before diving into these, I should take a quick moment to explain the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8. There is plenty of press out there that compares these two in more detail, but essentially is boils down to the following: both Windows RT and Windows 8 run the new Windows UI (formerly called “Metro”) that is optimized for touch, but Windows 8 also supports all Windows desktop applications, drivers, and peripherals. Windows RT can only run applications that are available on the Windows Store and will have more limited device/peripheral compatibility (for example, see this list of HP printers where many models are not supported at all on Windows RT or are supported but with reduced functionality).

Myth#1: Windows RT on ARM delivers better battery life and smaller, lighter form factors

Since ARM-based CPUs have come from low power mobile phone origins, many people assume that they continue to have a large power advantage over Intel based CPU’s. However, with the latest generation of Intel Atom SOC’s (systems on chips) on 32nm, this power consumption gap has been close to eliminated, with the Intel SOC often times consuming even lower power. Additionally, the latest generation Intel Atom SOC fully supports Connected Standby on Windows 8, enabling weeks of standby battery life while still allowing you to resume to your desktop with all of your content already up-to-date in less than a second.

Looking at the Asus Vivo Tab lineup of Windows tablets on Asus’ website makes this point clear. The Asus Vivo Tab (running the full version of Windows 8 on the Intel Atom Z760, formerly codenamed “Clover Trail”) is spec’ed at 10.5 hours of battery life, compared to 9 hours for the Asus Vivo Tab RT (running Windows RT on an ARM processor) running the same workload. The Vivo Tab does have a slightly larger battery pack (30Wh vs. 25Wh), but even after normalizing for this, the two are within 5% of each other, and the Vivo Tab has a larger 11.6” screen that consumes more power.

Lastly, both of these devices are less than 9mm thick (thinner than both the Microsoft Surface and the latest iPad for comparison). And all Intel Atom-based Windows 8 tablets are fanless, allowing for thin, light, and silent devices that are perfect for on-the-go usage.

Myth#2: Tablets with Windows 8 on Intel cost much more than ARM-based WinRT devices

I still see this show up in the occasional press article, claiming that you’ll have to dish out $100’s of extra dollars to get an X86 (Intel architecture) tablet that runs the full version of Windows 8. The Asus Vivo Tab RT with 32GB of storage is listed for $599 at Best Buy, but their Intel Atom-based Vivo Tab Smart due later this year is expected to be $499. And the Intel Atom-based Acer Iconia W510 tablet with 64GB is listed today on Amazon at $599.

Perhaps most importantly, all of these Intel Atom-based tablets run the full version of Windows 8, meaning that in addition to the new Windows Store apps, you have full compatibility with the millions of Windows apps and peripherals that you use today, all of which is lost with Windows RT. A colleague of mine from another company recently asked me the following: if I can get a device that has the same battery life, fits in the same form factor, and supports all Windows desktop applications and peripherals at the same price as a Windows RT tablet, why would anyone buy Windows RT? Good question.

Myth#3: Intel Atom doesn’t deliver the performance needed for a great Windows 8 experience

The latest gen Intel Atom processor has been built from the ground up to deliver the performance needed for a great Windows 8 experience, thanks to two cores (with hyper-threading) on 32nm technology that can burst up to 1.8GHz. The integrated SOC includes hardware blocks that specialize in accelerating video content, letting you play back HD movies while still only sipping power. But just as importantly, Intel has invested considerably in optimizing the driver and software stacks for our products on Windows 8, delivering an experience that is fast, responsive, and optimized for touch. Check out what some of the early tech press are saying, or better yet, try one yourself at Best Buy. I bet you’ll be impressed.

Also, for users that demand best-in-class performance for heavy productivity, content creation, 3D gaming, etc., there are plenty of Intel Core-based tablets, convertibles, and Ultrabooks to choose from, all of which support the full version of Windows 8 as well with the performance and security you’d expect from Intel in a PC.

Myth#4: Windows 8 means Microsoft Surface

Microsoft is doing a great job marketing Windows 8 and their Surface tablets, but given that the messaging around these often times show up at the same time, appear in the same press headlines, etc., I’ve mistakenly seen consumers conclude that Microsoft Surface is Windows 8. While the Surface is a cool product and we at Intel are of course excited about the Surface Pro that runs the full version of Windows 8 on an Intel Core processor, the reality is that Surface is just one OEM’s instantiation of a Windows tablet, with Microsoft this time being the OEM.

At the Intel tablet launch event in September, seven OEM’s announced their Intel Atom based tablets, and several other designs have been announced since then. The full breadth of the Intel ecosystem with its OEM partners enables a degree of consumer choice that isn’t possible otherwise, with OEM’s offering features not available on Surface alone, such as 11.6″ screens, detachable keyboards that will work on your lap, styluses for document editing, etc.

So in summary, Intel Atom-based tablets running Windows 8 offer a truly no compromise experience: enabling best in class battery life in sleek form factors, supporting the always connected experience of Windows Connected Standby, supporting all of the Windows desktop applications that you use today (and that three year old printer you have on your desk…that will work too), all at very competitive price points. Here’s to an exciting holiday retail season in tech!

The Ultimate Intel® Inspired Convertible Ultrabook™ has Launched http://scoop.intel.com/the-ultimate-intel%c2%ae-inspired-convertible-ultrabook%e2%84%a2-has-launched/ http://scoop.intel.com/the-ultimate-intel%c2%ae-inspired-convertible-ultrabook%e2%84%a2-has-launched/#comments Fri, 26 Oct 2012 18:19:01 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9865 Read more >]]> Today, you can get an Ultrabook™ convertible. A laptop when you need a tablet when you want it.

What does that mean? The Intel inspired Ultrabook™ and Intel process based tablets deliver a full range of new, amazing experiences with all your existing apps and devices because Intel Architecture uniquely runs the full version Windows 8.

People will have access to the new user interface, start screen, live tiles and apps in the Windows store. And — because it’s running on Intel — you can still use the applications you already own in the familiar desktop, like your favorite Microsoft office and applications for music, photos and work — not to mention peripherals like printers and scanners. It’s the best of both worlds.

Touch: Some of the latest Ultrabooks now have touchscreens, and when combined with a touch-friendly redesign of Windows, users have more options at their fingertips. Our research shows people will find it faster, easier, intuitive, and fun. Touch transforms the computing experience from work to play.

In addition to the new touch-friendly user interface from Microsoft, touch capabilities are made possible thanks to the work of Intel and the device manufacturers to optimize their new line-up for a fast, fluid touch experience.

2-in-1 devices that convert from PC to Tablet: Thanks to touch capabilities, device makers like ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba have gotten very creative in their designs. Why not have a full computing experience when you need to be productive and creative, and convert to a tablet when you want to watch a movie or play with a mobile app? Each company have found unique ways to do this differently. There are now computers that transform from clamshell to tablet mode via swivels, flips, ferris wheel-like turns, slides and more. Hard to imagine? Check out the pictures below to see a few of the devices in action.

The Intel® Inspired Ultrabook™ brings Touch-Enabled Emotions to Life http://scoop.intel.com/the-intel%c2%ae-inspired-ultrabook%e2%84%a2-brings-touch-enabled-emotions-to-life/ http://scoop.intel.com/the-intel%c2%ae-inspired-ultrabook%e2%84%a2-brings-touch-enabled-emotions-to-life/#comments Wed, 24 Oct 2012 21:29:04 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9813 Read more >]]> Touch Animation is here. Even kids can use it.

Optimizing CrazyTalk Animator for the Ultrabook™ Device.

John Martin, vice president of product marketing for Reallusion, was nothing but smiles when describing the Ultrabook™. “The Ultrabook is fantastic. There’s so much power in such a small form factor,” he said. Animation software developer, Reallusion, is in the smiles, frowns and any other emotion business with its CrazyTalk Animator, which allows users to create actors using any photo or illustration and animate these actors in 2-D.

Reallusion had early access to develop on the Ultrabook and the company was able to kick-off development of CrazyTalk Animator for the touch capabilities of Ultrabook. “After you’ve created your character from a photograph, you can now work on the emotion using touch. It’s a lot like digital puppeteering. You can animate everything based on touch.”

The Ultrabook allows for much faster processing as well. “The changes a user makes are rendered in real time,” said Martin. “Because of the mobility, people can use motion capture anywhere with our iClone software and Microsoft Kinect.”

For Martin, the possibilities of touch and animation extend far beyond professional animators. “Kids could use this software. It’s an immersive way to interact with the Ultrabook and it helps them learn about emotions.”

Reallusion is looking forward to more innovation in partnership with Intel. “When you see the possibilities of digital photography and animation, it’s truly amazing.” said Martin.

Intel Celebrates International Day of the Girl! Take Part! http://scoop.intel.com/intel-celebrates-international-day-of-the-girl-take-part/ http://scoop.intel.com/intel-celebrates-international-day-of-the-girl-take-part/#comments Thu, 11 Oct 2012 23:46:12 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9690 Read more >]]> It’s 10-11-12 today, The United Nations decided to declare Thursday, October 11, the first ever “day of the girl” to draw attention to the value of girls around the globe.

Intel supports education for all people. Intel and 10x10act.org have come together to support this historic day with individuals and partners around the globe, holding events to raise awareness in local communities about the importance of educating girls, and providing opportunities for them to succeed.

We know that when girls and leaders come together to discuss critical issues like gender stereotypes, discrimination, and digital literacy, new ways of thinking and addressing these educational barriers will emerge, and change for good will follow.

Did you know that there are 1B girls under the age of 15 in the world*? That’s >14% of the total population. Research in this area shows that when 10% more girls go to school, a country’s GDP increases 3% and wages rise 20% for every year beyond 4th grade that a girl remains in school**. The research also shows that even in the poorest economies, the majority of women invest their wages in education and family, creating a positive education cycle and improving the quality of life.

Yet despite all that, girls around the world aren’t in school, and that’s magnified in developing nations where one in four aren’t in school. Women also have limited access to technology in much of the world. This is due to a combination of factors, some are cultural, some are economic and some are the result of broader social challenges. Even here in the U.S. young girls face a big challenge, which perhaps many of our own daughters face; they are discouraged by their peers (and sometimes even parents) from studying or excelling in math and science due to long-standing gender stereotypes (ie. doctors are male, nurses are female).

Electrified, David Blaine Completes Stunt! http://scoop.intel.com/electrified-david-blaine-completes-stunt/ http://scoop.intel.com/electrified-david-blaine-completes-stunt/#comments Tue, 09 Oct 2012 00:50:18 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9671 Read more >]]> Today, master magician David Blaine—with the help of Intel—completed his latest stunt: His stood for 72 hours non-stop on a 20-foot high platform in a New York City park.

He was surrounded by seven huge Tesla coils that continuously streamed 1 million volts of electricity around him the entire time.

TimeAccording to Time magazine, the collaboration between Intel and Blaine started at a dinner party during which Blaine stole the watch of Intel’s Johan Jervoe, who leads partner marketing for the Corporate Marketing Group.

“Fortunately for both of them, Jervoe was more intrigued than annoyed, and offered to combine forces for Blaine’s next stunt, something that the magician does not usually do. This time, Blaine was excited by the possibility of literally letting people in on the magic through technology. Bravely, Intel seems unfazed by the deadly potential of the stunt,” Time said.

That’s because spectators where able to control the intensity of the electricity, using Intel-supplied Ultrabooks at the stunt’s location in Manhattan, as well as in public areas in London, Sydney, Beijing and Tokyo.

New York TimesThe New York Times asked, “Is this a new form of cyber-sadism? Executives at Intel, which is sponsoring the event… prefer to call it an ‘experiential exposition.’”

Computer WeeklyComputer Weekly said Blaine might have come up with a solution to short-lived laptop batteries: “It is selfless of Blaine to demonstrate that the obvious solution is simply to send a million volts through your body, and stick one finger into your Ultrabook power socket, and never again will you be left cursing the hopeless battery life of portable devices. Even if you might need to learn to craft Powerpoints one-handed.”

What Clothing Accessories Should be Intel Smart? The busy Director of Creative Innovation at Intel turns out to be very visionary about what needs to become “smart” around us, in our home and even what we wear.

Will.i.am dropped into an Intel engineering conference in Portland, Oregon on Tuesday to have a chat with Intel Senior Vice President, Shmuel, “Mooly” Eden, where Mooly asked will.i.am on the origin of the will.i.am. will.i.am quipped that his name is a registered domain along with many other similar versions like i.am.will and it was all inspired by the dotcom phenomenon. Another proof point that will.i.am was visionary from way back in the day when technology started to boom and he could change his name to literally a domain. Will dot I dot am.

Their conversation went very visionary, from talking about how all things, including accessories will become smart. Perhaps in the future we should look to make your glasses smart to your earrings, or smart jackets?? They discussed the possibility that your house should have an OS. My favorite exchange was when will.i.am talked about how the phone is now your wallet, essentially a computer with all your information on it. He asked Mooly “why do you wear a watch”? Your phone now tells you what time it is, your watch shows your age, as the audience chuckled. The watch should become smart, all accessories should be smart. Will.i.am dressed in his usual fashionable style, even commented about the jacket lapel? What is it for?? Does anybody know? Maybe we can make the lapel smart??

This intrigued me to find the origin of the lapel and it came from older jackets being unbuttoned and folded back in hot weather.

Now my question to you is what is your idea of a smart lapel? Maybe we should make it digital to keep a pulse on your body temperature?

Join will.i.am on the Ultrabook Project

Part travelogue and part insiders’ guide, the Ultrabook Project is a musical journey and a global cultural experience through eyes and ears of hip hop music legend will.i.am. In 2012, will.i.am began traveling to various cities throughout the world armed with an Ultrabook, exploring, documenting, collaborating with local artists, and ultimately creating original pieces of music inspired by each of the cities he visits.

will.i.am has already traveled to Tokyo, Mexico City and Seoul. The Ultrabook Project site gives you a free music download of each city’s newly created song, lets you read articles about will.i.am’s travels, and you can learn more about the power of creating with an Ultrabook. Alex is in his mid twenties. He lives in LA. He restores antiques. And he’s a pretty normal guy. Except for one thing: Everyday he wakes up in a completely different body. On the inside he’s the same person. But on the outside, he’s always someone new. And it’s been happening for as long as he can remember. He keeps track of all the different people he’s been by recording a daily video diary using his Toshiba Portégé Ultrabook™ laptop inspired by Intel.

His story comes to life through a combination of six filmed episodes interspersed with the user generated auditions. It is interactive storytelling that all takes place on Alex’s Facebook timeline. Green with Envy – Intel No. 1 for User of Renewable Energy in the U.S. http://scoop.intel.com/green-with-envy-intel-no-1-for-user-of-renewable-energy-in-the-u-s/ http://scoop.intel.com/green-with-envy-intel-no-1-for-user-of-renewable-energy-in-the-u-s/#comments Thu, 02 Aug 2012 16:24:55 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9225 Read more >]]> Though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has long published rankings of companies’ use of renewable power, this year the agency decided to put together a separate ranking just for tech companies.

Against some pretty well-known competition, Intel was named the No. 1 user of renewable energy in the U.S.—buying nearly 2.8 billion kilowatt hours of green power, constituting 89% of our energy use. That’s more than double the next largest tech user, Microsoft, with 1.2 billion kW hours. Cisco, Sprint and Dell round out the top five. (View the full list at the EPA’s website.)

“Intel is inching closer toward the goal of covering 100 percent of its corporate power use,” Toms Hardware noted.

The site added, “Somewhat surprising may be the fact that Google is not quite as green as the perception may indicate. All those solar panels on Google’s roof and wind turbines hardly show any impact: Google acquires only 103 million kWh per year—which is about 5 percent” of its total energy use. Google ranked No. 6 on the list.

Now, it wasn’t much of a surprise that Intel won—we’ve been No. 1 on the EPA’s broader Green Power Partnership rankings since 2008, according to the Environmental Leadereco-news website. The list ranks companies in a variety of sectors—for example, the No. 2 overall green power purchaser after Intel this year was Kohl’s, the department store chain.

Intel buys electricity from small hydroelectric sources, solar energy providers, bio-gas companies, and wind-energy firms.

A guest post by Paul McKeon

‘All the world’s a stage’, wrote William Shakespeare. Had he been born in 1964 instead of 1564, he might instead have written to ‘all the world is a social network.’

Intel’s Me The Musical is a new on-line experience which allows the men and women players on Facebook’s social stage to take an entertaining retrospective journey, via song and dance, through the times of our lives.

Visit intel.com/musical and log on with your Facebook account and the site creates a personalized animated movie which starts at the very beginning, the day you were born, and moves through a series of musical numbers which draw on the key themes and events of each succeeding decade.

Along the way it adds a personal touch by including friends from Facebook and reminders of significant individual milestones.

Me The Musical features iconic moments including the moon landing, creation of the World Wide Web, rise of email and, of course, introduction of Facebook itself. In keeping with Intel’s role as a “sponsor of tomorrow,” it ends with a symbolic step into the future.

‘Me The Musical is a world first and, according to Stephanie Gan, Intel’s Asia-Pacific Advertising Manager, its primarily purpose is to entertain. “Life moves very quickly, so it’s fun to take time for a diversion once in a while,” she says.

But, like any good musical, it also has a message.

“It is important to celebrate an interesting past with an eye on the future,” says Jayant Murty, Intel’s director of brand strategy and integrated marketing for Asia Pacific

“At its heart, ‘Me The Musical’ is a celebration of shared experiences and of the things that unite us,” Murty says. For example, a love of nostalgia, of storytelling, and music and dance are themes common to many of the world’s cultures,”

“It is an experience that is both general and very personal at the same. By including selected elements from your own personal profile, ‘Me The Musical’ helps to show your life against a broader context of what was happening in the world at the time.”

“Me The Musical” also serves to highlight the enormous impact technology has made in people’s lives and look to what Intel says is a new era in computing.

“The invention of the microprocessor has changed our lives remarkably,” Murty says. “Today it is hard to think of a life-changing innovation which isn’t being assisted by computers. But computing itself is evolving and new devices called Ultrabook™ represent a new era.”

Experience Intel’s Me the Musical now.

Today, I’m going to talk about Intel Insider, what it is, what it does, and why you all should be excited about it. As a movie lover, I’m all for a technology like Intel Insider, which makes the movie watching experience simpler by allowing; one the luxury of watching a high resolution movies on a PC , and two allows for a seamless connection between PC and TV set so that you can buy a film online on your PC but still watch it on the TV. As my previous blog entry on Generation Y suggested, we are in the process of making this technology appeal to people aged 14-34, what I’m learning as my work progresses, is that this is really a technology that’s going to benefit movie lovers, busy people, busy families, and the younger crowd, and I bet we all fit into at least one of those categories. So what can Intel Insider do for you? Read on and find out!

Imagine it’s a weeknight and that you want to watch that new film that just came out on DVD, but you don’t have time to go pick it up from the store, it’s not yet offered on on-demand, and you aren’t sure if you’re going to love it. You can log in to Best Buy® and instantly get access to reviews, the movie trailer, and choose to purchase the movie. Personally, I like to watch Bollywood films, and I don’t always want to drive for miles to go watch a movie at an Indian theatre, or go hunt for it at my limited selection of Indian video stores, thanks to Intel Insider’s™ partnering with Hungama® I will no longer have this issue, I have the option to watch these movies online with the click of a button. Furthermore, it is possible that some movies may become available while they are still in theatres, imagine how convenient that is for a busy business person, or a family with young kids that doesn’t want to hire a babysitter every time they want to watch a new movie. Intel Insider® is for those people who love movies but don’t always have the luxury of going out to the movies, or going to a video store, it is for the busy work people, the busy family, the family with young kids, and even the time-pressed college student, all who want to watch high resolution movies, without the hassle of having to make a lot of extra room in their schedules.

This is a unique technology that is currently being developed for the benefit of the consumer. Here is the latest regarding Intel Insider™, see for yourself what it can do!

An Introduction to Generation Y and Intel Insider http://scoop.intel.com/an-introduction-to-generation-y-and-intel-insider/ http://scoop.intel.com/an-introduction-to-generation-y-and-intel-insider/#comments Thu, 12 Jul 2012 22:07:14 +0000 http://blogs.intel.com/scoop/?p=9025 Read more >]]> This is a featured guest post by Intel Generation Y intern; Vishakha Gupta

This past week I have been doing some research on Generation Y. Who are these people you might ask? They have been described as entitled, tech savvy, family centric, achievement-oriented, team oriented, and attention craving. These are the people who grew up with internet, smartphones, ipods, and basically have had access to information, free information I might add, at their fingertips for nearly their entire life. So, why should we care, you ask?

Today, these young adults are beginning to enter the workforce; and also quickly becoming the next generation of major consumers. This means that several companies will now have to figure out how to appeal to this hard-to-please generation.

A Google® search on how to market to this generation will give you a list of their demands:

 • cheap cost
 • high quality
 • fast service
 • an experience

As a person of Generation Y myself, I have to say this list is pretty accurate. Look out world here comes a generation that’s going to keep everyone on their toes!

So how will Intel® appeal to this generation?

Intel has launched Intel Insider™, a technology that enables people to watch high resolution, new movies, on their laptops and TVs, this technology already meets the generations’ demands. For example, the ability to watch a 1080p resolution movie is already meeting a standard of high quality. Additionally the convenience of being able to rent or buy movies from a PC, which, by the way, is where most of this generation watches their content, and then being able to beam them wirelessly to their TV screen is both a fast service and an experience

Click to learn more about Intel Insider™.

In the upcoming weeks the Intel Insider™ team will be looking at such things as:

 • The movie watching preferences of the generation
 • What this generation wants in the devices on which they watch media
 • Conducting surveys and focus groups

The team wants to dig deep into what makes this generation tick, and make sure that Intel Insider™ technology meets their high standards! Check out this video to see the latest on Intel Insider™.

One to teach kids Spanish and one to download recipes and learn to cook the whole enchilada!

If you have kids and want them to learn Spanish, give Superstar Spanish a try. It’s good for kids ages 5-10 by using phonics to teach kids Spanish. Users see and hear the letters and numbers, then play games to reinforce the words. Stars are awarded too! I’m getting my niece and nephew hooked on this vs phonics. lol.

CookIt 123 has hundreds of recipes for Mexican dishes. You can filter all of those recipes by meal type or ingredient and when you find one you can mark it as a favorite and download it or print it. Better yet, once you have downloaded the app, all of the recipes are stored in your computer so you don’t need internet access to see them.

I’m using the app now to figure out my birthday/Cinco de Mayo dinner. Maybe something with poblano chilis? Or how about trying something new with avocado? So whether it’s Taco Tuesday, Burrito Brunch, Fajita Friday, choose a meal and enjoy the Sangria or margarita! Salud!

What are you cooking for Cinco de Mayo?

Find it with the recipe app CookIt 123:

Speaking of healthcare, I got a huge kick the other day visiting the doctors office as all the staff had Intel based computer technology at their fingertips. It was cool to see them continuously enter in all my vitals and health statistics, not just for me but all the patients, every step of the way a computer was involved, and the high blood pressure machine was connected directly to the laptop. It is truly cool to see what amazing things people do with technology.

OK, back to 3rd Generation, I took an excerpt out of the press release that describes some of the ground breaking technology and what it means for you.

“Tick-Plus” – The Intel Advantage
The performance gains found in the new processors are due in part to the groundbreaking, three-dimensional structure of the new Intel transistors. Until today, computers, servers and other devices have used only two-dimensional planar transistors. Adding a third dimension to transistors allows Intel to increase transistor density and put more capabilities into every square millimeter of these new processors. Intel has once again re-invented the transistor and delivered an unprecedented combination of performance and energy efficiency, thus sustaining the pace of technology advancement and fueling Moore’s Law for years to come.

In a nutshell or transistor, we get better performance with our technology. This new processor packs a huge punch. From the great visual experience to performance with Intel Quick Sync Video 2.0 technology built into the new processors, people can also convert their videos up to two times faster than even last year’s processors. And up to 23 times faster than PC’s just three years old.

So the net/net – 2x better gaming and 2x better video transcoding with Intel HD Graphics and Intel QUick Sync Video respectively. Also, HD Graphics now supports hundreds of popular gaming titles and supports DirectX11 (for the geeky gamers).

Last but not least, the new products are on 22nm processor technology- meaning the stuff is getting wicked small, with amazing performance and battery life improvements.

Here are some fun facts about 22nm:

 • More than 6 million 22nm tri-gate transistors could fit in the period at the end of this sentence.
 • A 22nm tri-gate transistor’s gates that are so small, you could fit more than 4000 of them across the width of a human hair.
 • If a typical house shrunk as transistors have, you would not be able to see a house without a microscope. To see a 22nm with the naked eye, you would have to enlarge a chip to be larger than a house.
 • Compared to Intel’s first microprocessor, the 4004, introduced in 1971, a 22nm CPU runs over 4000 times as fast and each transistor uses about 5000 times less energy. The price per transistor has dropped by a factor of about 50,000.
 • A 22nm transistor can switch on and off well over 100 billion times in one second. It would take you around 2000 years to flick a light switch on and off that many times.

TuneIn Radio: Free App for Your Global Listening Pleasure http://scoop.intel.com/free-app-radio/ http://scoop.intel.com/free-app-radio/#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2012 10:53:01 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=6334 Read more >]]> This is a guest blog from our blogger friend, Paula Wessells, at Intel AppUp.

Thanks to the Internet, we are no longer at the mercy of radio stations within our general area. Gone are the days of sitting in the driveway to hear the end of an awesome song. Yes, we have given up radio karma (that’s the lucky moment you turn on the radio and despite the limited station selection, the perfect song is playing for that moment) but now we can roam free and carry our radio everywhere.

The free TuneIn Radio app brings the best of both traditional radio and Internet radio together in one place – you can listen to more than 50,000 radio stations around the world and 1.2 million on-demand programs. Hello global radio synergy!

It’s really simple, you just download the free app, plug in your headphones and there’s the most perfect desk dancing song. Or you could go searching for it — I’m sure it’s playing out there somewhere. Or perhaps try a radio station in a whole different part of the world. Desk dancing is pretty universal.

So go and download the free app, TuneIn Radio, and get ready to do some amazing desk dancing.

Less Toxic Cancer Treatments: Student Wins Intel Science Competition http://scoop.intel.com/less-toxic-cancer-treatments-student-wins-intel-science-competition/ http://scoop.intel.com/less-toxic-cancer-treatments-student-wins-intel-science-competition/#comments Tue, 20 Mar 2012 12:50:03 +0000 http://scoop.intel.com/?p=6303 Read more >]]> Intel and Society for Science & the Public (SSP) recognized the winners of the nation’s most elite and demanding high school research competition—the Intel Science Talent Search—at a gala Tuesday night at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C .

Nithin Tumma, 17, of Fort Gratiot, Mich., won the top award of $100,000 from the Intel Foundation for his research, which could lead to more direct, targeted, effective and less toxic breast cancer treatments. He analyzed the molecular mechanisms in cancer cells and found that by inhibiting certain proteins, we may be able to slow the growth of cancer cells and decrease their malignancy. Nithin is first in his class of 332, a varsity tennis player and a volunteer for the Port Huron Museum, where he started a restoration effort for historical and cultural landmarks.

Second place and $75,000 went to Andrey Sushko, 17, of Richland, Wash., for his development of a tiny motor, only 7 mm (almost 1/4 inch) in diameter, which uses the surface tension of water to turn its shaft. Born in Russia, Andrey worked from home to create his miniature motor, which could pave the way for other micro-robotic devices. Andrey, a long-time builder of small boats, recently filed for a Guinness World Record for the smallest radio-controlled sailing yacht.

Third place honors and $50,000 went to Mimi Yen, 17, of Brooklyn, N.Y., for her study of evolution and genetics, which focuses on microscopic worms, specifically looking at their sex habits and hermaphrodite tendencies. Mimi believes that through research such as hers, we may better understand the genes that contribute to behavioral variations in humans. Mimi was born in Honduras and is fluent in Cantonese. She plays French horn and volunteers to prepare and deliver meals to people with serious illnesses.

The top three winners—Andrey Sushko, Nithin Tumma, and Mimi Yen—pose with CEO Paul Otellini at the awards ceremony Tuesday night.

These finalists join the ranks of other notable Science Talent Search alumni who over the past 70 years have gone on to win seven Nobel Prizes, two Fields Medals, four National Medals of Science, 11 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships and even an Academy Award for Best Actress.

“Hands-on experience with math and science, such as that required of Intel Science Talent Search finalists, encourages young people to think critically, solve problems and understand the world around them, said CEO Paul Otellini. “Rather than simply memorizing facts and formulas, or repeating experiments with known outcomes, this competition engages students in an exciting way and provides a deeper level of understanding in such important but challenging subjects.”

In total, the Intel Foundation awarded $1.25 million for the Intel Science Talent Search 2012. When Intel assumed the title sponsorship 14 years ago, it increased the annual awards by more than $1 million to bring greater attention to math and science achievement, encourage more youth to embrace these fields, and further show the impact these subjects have on the country’s future success.

This year’s finalists hail from 16 states and represent 39 schools. Of the 1,839 high school seniors who entered the Intel Science Talent Search 2012, 300 were announced as semifinalists in January. Of those, 40 were chosen as finalists and invited to Washington, D.C., to compete for the top 10 awards.
