“Science is Rock and Roll!”
Our Director of Creative Innovation, will.i.am made a few primetime and cable appearances over the weekend. First he was on Piers Morgan Friday night on CNN promoting his support and participation of theFIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology) Robotic Competition, that aired on ABC Sunday, August 14th.
Second he was the focus on the Sunday ABC one-hour special promoting education, science and technology and featured highlights from the 20th Annual FIRST Robotics championship. It featured performances by the Black Eyed Peas, as well as appearances from other celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Bono, Miley Cyrus, Willow Smith, Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake and Steven Tyler all in support of education and the science competition.
As I watched both shows, I was able to get a personal insight to will.i.am’s life. He grew up in the rough neighborhoods of LA, with ADD and always wanting to learn and achieve. He talked about how his teachers inspired him to ask questions despite his challenges and even let him write his name all over the chalkboard instead of writing on the walls to practice his writing. He has the passion and the drive to make the geek in all of us cool and hip! He then went on to mention Intel several times on the ABC special, talking about joining Intel back in January and a shot out to Intel and its support for science and education! How exciting to see him talk up Intel!
In addition to this, will.i.am participated in the contest, his team, along with Folsom high schoolers; MC Builder, MC Screw, MC code joined will.i.am and teamed up to form the team “Dirty bots” and built their own robot for the competition. Dirty Bots won!
I am personally excited to see will.i.am combine his coolness with his geekness to promote science and technology and put the geeks on the map with a primetime show on ABC. I got a feeling that geek is officially cool. Kudos to all involved. www.intel.com
