Wonders of WiMAX at CES

WiMax was something I really tuned into during the noisy tech bliss that is CES. Maybe because the demonstrations were better compared with what I saw at [CES 2008](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akr-OnVF4fc), or maybe because the high speed wireless technology is really hitting mainstream.

What's your Advice to the Incoming Obama CTO?

Thousands of tech enthusiasts rocked the tech vote at CES by letting Intel know what the technology priorities should be for the incoming Obama administration's CTO. As I said in my earlier post, Intel CTO Justin Rattner will include these survey results in a letter to the new administration's CTO. Voters to date have named the following as the top priorities:
  • implementing a new national health care system by 2012
  • investing more in K-12 education
  • driving a national policy around green tech and renewable energy federal initiatives that expedite the rollout of city-wide broadband.
Join other tech enthusiasts in voting... What do you think?

Photo Montage: Intel Chairman Barrett's CES Keynote

Like I explained earlier here, I didn't make it to CES this year and had to watch from afar. Fortunately there have been some fantastic videos and photos posted from the event that make me feel like I was almost there.

Here's a collection of some photos taken during Intel Chairman Craig Barrett's keynote at CES this past Friday afternoon. This is one particular part of the big event in Vegas that I was truly bummed to have missed. Barrett talked about a subject that is important to me personally (education) and reiterated the goals of the Small Things Challenge announced earlier last week, and he also had some fantastic guest appearance, too. Adam Levine from Maroon 5 and Adam Duritz from Counting Crows joined Barrett on stage and the Counting Crows played at the Intel party later that night at LAX at the Luxor!

Rocketboom's Video Speed Tour of CES 2009

Our pals from Rocketboom spent part of Friday filming and editing this inside the Intel booth. If you like a fast-paced look at the eye-candy all around CES then this “Supercuts” video’s for you.

WiMAX Inside a Netbook at CES 2009

WiMAX'd Acer AspireOne Netbook

I got my hands on an Acer AirOne netbook to our engineers added the Intel Link 5150 Wi-Fi-/WiMAX chip. I'd seen Centrino 2 laptops with WiMAX and I followed the launch of WiMAX service now available in Baltimore and Portland, but I had never seen a netbook connect to WiMAX.

Mobility takes center stage at CES 2009

Yup, it's true ... mobility products remained one of the hottest topics on the show floor at CES; with the latest in notebooks, netbooks, ultra-portable laptops and MIDS (mobile Internet Devices) from vendors like HP, Intel, Toshiba, Dell, Asus, and Sony to name a few. While the "C" in CES is for consumer, there were several small business products on the show floor, like the HP Mini 2140 netbook. The show has been awesome so far and I am excited about all these new cool products hitting the market.

Video Review: HP Mini 2140 Netbook at CES

Much love to Andy for giving me back stage pass at the HP booth at CES. I met Andy the night before at the Zappos party and he agreed to do a quick review of the HP Netbooks (Mini 2140 and the Mini 1000). These are pretty sweet machines.

From: Chairman Craig Barrett To: President Elect Obama

Here's what WE want Mr. Obama! As inauguration day gets closer and closer, we want the President Elect to know exactly what we're looking for in the first ever CTO. Here at CES 09 in Las Vegas, there is an entire booth dedicated to hearing what you think is most important for the new CTO to consider/work towards once the new administration takes office.

Designing the OQO Mobile Internet Device

Lovely little beams of blue light flickered off the antenna popping out of a tiny black box inside the CES Kickoff Party Thursday night. That’s when things turned real interesting and geeky…

Intel Booth at CES 2009 -- Setting Up Efren Toscano from TechZulu was first on the record button after we introduced ourselves to the cool guy who we would soon learn was the software wizard who built the award-winning, hot mobile Internet Device at CES, the OQO.

Intel Chairman Craig Barrett Encourages Everyone to do Something Small At CES 2009

In these tough economic times it's not uncommon for many of us to hunker down and focus on how this climate is affecting us and our families. I myself tend to cut back on extra spending, often limiting my contributions to the various chartible organizations to whom I give regularly. But as I listened to Intel Chairman Craig Barrett's keynote at CES today, a different feeling overwhelmed me: I felt the urge to give and to give more.

Dr. Barrett shared some troubling numbers on education in emerging countries. (The staggering statistic that suck in my mind was that 75 million children in the world are not in school.) He was then joined onstage individually by musical powerhouses Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows. They each highilighted the important work that organizations like Save The Children and Kiva.org are doing to provide necessary services for children and economic support for entrepreneurs and small business owners in emerging countries from around the world.

Behind the Scenes Interview with DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg

Last year, Intel and DreamWorks Animation announced a strategic partnership aimed at redefining 3-D filmmaking technology. This alliance will take full advantage of Intel's visual computing products and DreamWorks Animation's expertise in content creation to revolutionize the in-theater entertainment experience; with Monsters Vs Aliens being the first of many animated films to use what's known as Intru3d technology.

Check out this behind the scenes interview with Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks who talks about the importance of the Intel and DreamWorks relationship; what's next for 3-D technology, the upcoming Super Bowl commercial and even showcases a pair of 3-D glasses.

Straight from CES: Netbooks, Notebooks, or both?

I had a chance to interview Cindy - Product Marketing for Netbooks - and she explains the main differences and usage models between netbooks and notebooks. Key takeaway --- Netbooks are not meant to replace notebooks. They are merely companion devices. Now I wish the rest of the world would figure this out.

New convertible Classmate PCs are here!

Earlier today at CES, several computer manufacturers announced new Intel-based Classmate PCs with the convertible design that lets kids convert the clamshell design into a tablet. They look very cool... I can't wait to play with one! convertible3.jpg

Ubergizmo posted live updates from the press conference where the PCs were unveiled.

Here's a quick rundown of key features of the new Intel-based convertible Classmate PC design. More info, including tech specifications, here.

  • Dual mode of use for students - tablet mode and traditional laptop mode - adjusts with changing needs in the classroom
  • When open like a traditional laptop, the screen swivels 180 degrees for sharing with peers and teachers
  • Touch screen & advanced palm-resting technology promote new models of interaction for children
  • Allows for writing or drawing directly on the screen in a natural way
  • Built-in camera rotates 180 degrees to enable students to interact in a new way
  • Carrying handle, lightweight and compact size to support micro-mobility inside the classroom
  • Durable construction and rugged outer case
  • Water-resistant keyboard
  • Education-specific features and touch-optimized software

Intel also announced the Intel Learning Series, an initiative that integrates hardware, software and services designed specifically for education and supports technology companies that customize products and services in their own country, innovating in and around the classmate PC reference design. Local PC manufacturers will offer both the new Intel-powered convertible classmate PC and the existing clamshell design to students and teachers and the PCs will be preloaded with student-friendly software through support from the Intel Learning Series.

The addition of the new convertible PC will coexist with the existing clamshell design, which is being used in Portugal's Magalhães (Magellan) Initiative - the Portuguese government's country-wide program to provide PCs to all elementary school children via the local computer manufacturer and telecom service providers. Intel has been involved with various pilots of the clamshell-design Classmate PCs in Mexico and Nigeria. Check out these videos on the pilots -- pretty amazing and inspiring what technology can do in the classroom.

Video Interview: Intel My WiFi Personal Area Network at CES

Just yesterday at the 2009 CES Show, we released new software that allows Centrino 2 notebooks to create a personal area network of connected Wi Fi enabled devices like an iPhone, a digital photo frame and a printer to name a few; and can connect up to eight different devices. Check out this behind-the-scenes interview with our very own Connie Brown and Intel Product Manager, Scott Doenecke describing My WiFi.

Driving Wi-Fi Robots with Intel My WiFi

Wi-Fi is getting into everything. One of the coolest is the Spykee Spy Robot, a Wi-Fi remote-controlled webcam robot. At CES, MPG Wireless shows how the just launched Intel My WiFi turns a Centrino 2 notebook into a portable Wi-Fi network. What does this mean? The notebook and the Spykee Spy Robot can go anywhere--no Wi-Fi access point required! If a Wi-Fi access point is available, the notebook and Skypee Spy Robot can be simultaneously connected to each other and the Internet. Talk about adding even more mobility to a remote controlled robot! This is what My WiFi is all about.

Learn more about this very cool technology that is going to change your digital life check out this animation.

Widgets, TV, Internet...and Intel

eric kim 2.jpgWill we ever be able to easily merge the Internet and the TV?

It will happen, someday. Many companies, including Intel, have and continue to try and skin that cat in a variety of ways, each with various degrees of success.

Have a read of a New York Times article and Disney's take on widgets, and tightening joint work between Hollywood and technology companies.

Not at CES? Watch it live on Techku from Intel booth

If you're like me, you're trying to stay on top of what's happening at CES right now from your cube in the office. Somehow its just not quite the same as being in the middle of the action in Vegas.

Fortunately, though, I can get the latest on so many of the cool gadgets and technology on display at CES online -- real time!

Video blogger extraordinaire and Intel Insider Sarah Austin (check her out on Pop17) is live-casting straight from the floor of CES at the Intel booth starting today through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Techku via Mogulus. And what's especially cool is that she'll be doing some of her broadcasting over Clear, 4G WiMAX network!

Check it out!

The NBC Universal Booth is the place to be at CES!

I am sitting here blogging directly from the NBC booth here at CES and they have quite the setup. The blogger lounge is fully equipped with hi-speed internet; there are flat screen LCD and Plasma TV's everywhere I look featuring movies and television shows; and so far the best thing is the little goodie bag that I received with a bunch of gadgets in a messenger bag.

Many of the NBC shows will be live from the booth, including the Access Hollywood and the Today Show. In fact, I just saw the end of CSNBC hosted by Maria Bartimoro (see pics below).

Here, Jonathan Accarrino from NBC Universal talks a little about the blogger lounge.

Vote, Help Us Write a Letter to President-Elect Obama's Future CTO

IntelSticker.jpg

During the recent election, the power of technology, in particular social media and online communities, was apparent to many. It was exciting for me to see how social media and the Internet could change the way we learn about and participate in the political process.

I was also encouraged to learn that President-Elect Obama plans to elect the country's first chief technology officer (CTO), which I hope will continue to enhance and encourage technology innovation both here in the U.S. and around the world.

On his technology web page Obama says, "I'm asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington...I'm asking you to believe in yours."

I am really lovin' my Netbook

... and not because I work for Intel either. I recently bought the Classmates PC Netbook for my 7 year old daughter just this past Christmas. She absolutely loves it but she can't play it very often. My 3 year old, who has a very strong personality and dominates the relationship, has taken complete ownership of the machine.

Watch this video and notice how she won't look up at me because she is too busy on Nickjr and Disney.

Digital Drag Race User Battle: And the winner is ...

... well, first let me explain what a user battle is before I reveal the winner. When we first starting planning for the Digital Drag Race a few months ago; we wanted to find a way to engage the community and activate their creative skills. And, since the official (or invitational) Drag Races were limited, we wanted provide an opportunity for those not invited to showcase their skills and participate as well.

Basically, we selected two user generated videos; put them side by side, and let the community decide who the winner is. The grand prize is well ... a stroking of the ego and an interview on the Inside Scoop.

But, before I get into the interview, I wanted to say that everyone who submitted their own videos did an AWESOME job; and I want to thank everyone for your participation.

Will TV and Internet Work Together Better at CES 2009?

After meeting Intel Insider JD Lasica a few weeks ago in San Francisco, I asked him what he was most interested in seeing happen at the Consumer Electronics Show 2009 in Las Vegas.

In his post Behold the Coming Cinematic Internet, Lasica shared a healthy perspective on the past and present challenges of getting television and Internet to move beyond the dating stage and into a deep, loving relationship inside our living rooms.

The long, yet short road to the CES show!

ces.gifIt's December 19 and there is less than 3 weeks before thousands of tech geeks congregate in the streets of Las Vegas to attend the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show. For Intel, this is a very important show for us because it allows us to showcase our very cool products, talk with real people and share our story. It's one thing to have conversation online; it's another to foster those same relationships up close and personal.

For me though, it's going to be beyond hectic; but that's how I live my life anyway so bring it.

I will be in Vegas for about 5 days supporting the show blogging, recording video, twittering, doing interviews, etc. Here are some things you can expect from me while I am there:

Hottest Gadgets of 2008

I'm publishing this guest post on behalf of Intel Insider Brian Solis, who agreed to share his list of favorite gadgets of the year.

With CES right around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to spotlight some of the hottest gadgets to debut in 2008 - especially before we look forward to the most anticipated products set to hit the streets in 2009.

2008 was an almost overwhelming year rich with advancements and innovation that practically warrants a top 100 list to do it justice. However, I'll focus on the products that specifically had a direct or indirect impact on my day-to-day workflow, personal entertainment, and also those few products that are currently sitting on my wish list.

Without further ado, let's just jump right in. Listed in no particular order:

Jawbone
Jawbone's second-generation Bluetooth headset absolutely rocks for me. I upgraded from the bigger, bulkier first generation model the very day the new unit arrived in stores. It lives up to its promise, providing a personal NoiseAssassin (TM) to kill surrounding noise allowing you and the personal on the other end of the line to speak and hear clearly.
