Today is stop #3 in our (virtual) Geek Travel Roadtrip, and we’re in northern Illinois. If you’re just joining us, see Stop 1 – California Bay Area Science and Technology Museums and Stop 2 – Houston, TX Science and Tech Museums.
Museum of Science and Industry: This museum in Chicago is a top attraction, and the place for us to go and geek out for a day. I grew up near Chicago, but it’s been years since I visited. It’s billed as the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, so it is well worth your time. If you’re planning a visit, make sure plan enough time so you can see regular and special exhibits. Current special exhibits include, You: The Experience, Science Storms, Body Works & the Cycle of Life, Fast Forward… Inventing the Future, as well as NetWorld. If you plan a trip this year, you can take in Tornado Alley in the Omnimax Theater.
Chicago has world class museums. If you have extra time, you might also want to stop at the Field Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Adler Planetarium. The Museum of Contemporary Photography or the Chicago Cultural Center are also stops to consider for a spare few hours.
Discovery Center Museum: The National Geographic Society named this museum to its list of Top 10 Children’s Museums. I have a nephew that loves going here so much that I bought him a season pass for Christmas. Check out the Exhibits page for more info on what to see while you’re there. Plus, swing by the special events calendar so you can possibly attend one of the Friday Fun Days throughout the summer.
Burpee Museum of Natural History: This museum is in the same area as the Discovery Center so it makes it easy to visit both places. Collections emphasize hands on education and learning. Make time to see Jane the Dinosaur, geoscience, geology, First People, and Ordovician Sea exhibits.
The Rockford Art Museum is also in this same museum complex in Rockford if you have time for one more stop.
Please drop me a comment below and let me know — where should I head next on this virtual road trip of science and technology museums?
