Intel Celebrates International Day of the Girl! Take Part!
It’s 10-11-12 today, The United Nations decided to declare Thursday, October 11, the first ever “day of the girl” to draw attention to the value of girls around the globe.
Intel supports education for all people. Intel and 10x10act.org have come together to support this historic day with individuals and partners around the globe, holding events to raise awareness in local communities about the importance of educating girls, and providing opportunities for them to succeed.
We know that when girls and leaders come together to discuss critical issues like gender stereotypes, discrimination, and digital literacy, new ways of thinking and addressing these educational barriers will emerge, and change for good will follow.
Did you know that there are 1B girls under the age of 15 in the world*? That’s >14% of the total population. Research in this area shows that when 10% more girls go to school, a country’s GDP increases 3% and wages rise 20% for every year beyond 4th grade that a girl remains in school**. The research also shows that even in the poorest economies, the majority of women invest their wages in education and family, creating a positive education cycle and improving the quality of life.
Yet despite all that, girls around the world aren’t in school, and that’s magnified in developing nations where one in four aren’t in school. Women also have limited access to technology in much of the world. This is due to a combination of factors, some are cultural, some are economic and some are the result of broader social challenges. Even here in the U.S. young girls face a big challenge, which perhaps many of our own daughters face; they are discouraged by their peers (and sometimes even parents) from studying or excelling in math and science due to long-standing gender stereotypes (ie. doctors are male, nurses are female).
What can you do?
Join the celebration. Take Action.
