My Unmobile Life – I Want My SSDs

You hear it all the time – treat your laptop gingerly and remember to back up your files. You think it won’t happen to you. My latest laptop lasted for an entire year, an all time record for the “power laptop destroyer,” who went through three or four hard drives last year. Convinced my new laptop was invincible, I did the unthinkable – a hard shut down followed by two hours in the car in 100 degree heat. You can guess how that ended.

Good news – I have a fantastic corporate back up system. Bad news – I had set the backups to only 3x/week. Worse yet, as a power user, I lost not only a whole lot of work data but also all the updates to personal files I don’t back up on the corporate server, just a monthly backup to a drive at home. Losing a month’s worth of data had me weeping openly. But three days later, I have my new laptop and have started the arduous process of getting it back to the status quo so I don’t have to think before I compute. I’m back power using again and dreaming of the day we’ll all have more durable solid state drives (SSDs) in our laptops!

This is one of my biggest fears. Really. I backed up my laptop last night.
