My Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade experience rates 7 out of 7!

windows-7-ultimate.jpgI’ve been dying to do this upgrade for a while, and I finally did the upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate! Yes, I said “upgrade”, mostly because I just wasn’t ready to do a full OS rebuild on my Core i7. But I also wanted to try out the upgrade feature that is so highly acclaimed…

Sixty-five minutes later… I was pleasantly surprised!

There are several choices in the Windows 7 OS realm… but as many of you know, I’m into the Extreme side of things…

Affordable Performance: How the NEW Intel Core i7 helps you to "Get Your Game ON!"

ci7_78[1].gifWhen people ask me for recommendations on buying (or building) a new PC, my first question is ‘How much do you want to spend’ - because like anything, you usually get what you pay for. Everyone who’s wanted Intel Core i7 performance can now purchase it, without worry - it’s gonna ROCK!

Thumbnail image for ci5_78x59.gifIf you’re like most people, you want a new PC that will play the latest games, manipulate your media files, and not cost and arm and a leg. You want the best ‘bang for the buck’ that you can buy in a computer today. With the latest Intel Core i7-800 Series, and Intel Core i5-700 Series Processors in conjunction with the new Intel P55 Chipset - you CAN have the best of both worlds.

Our team players aren't like your team players

Check out this hilaroius commercial that aired this evening right after the Emmy Awards. The commercial is featuring Intel Robotics Engineer, Louis LeGrand (played by an actor) and really exemplifies the true meaning of "team player". You can see the real Lous in action playing with a Robotic Sensing Arm here.

The Intel Core i5 Processor - what's in your gaming PC?

ci5_78x59.gifIf you've been waiting for the Core i5 Processor - then wait no longer! This CPU was just released and the reviews look pretty darned amazing!

The newest Core i5 45nm chips give you multi-threaded performance for faster multi-tasking, digital media creation, and gaming - and they're priced just right!

Socket 1156 is born! Here are the new chips that fit the new socket!

  • Core i7 870 2.93 GHz; 4 cores & 8 MB Intel® Smart Cache
  • Core i7 860 2.8 GHz; 4 cores & 8 MB Intel® Smart Cache
  • Core i5 570 2.66 GHz; 4 cores & 8 MB Intel® Smart Cache

And don't forget to snag a new P55 based motherboard to match up to your new gaming processor!

Who's planning to build one of these guys? This is definitely my current recommendation for those who wish to build a gaming rig on a budget - bang for the buck!

Wireless Power

Today, on CNN, there's an article talking about wireless electricity.  It seems to be quite the buzz around the internet this week...  as I also received the following TED demonstration from a co-worker who FWs all things interesting over to me via email:

OutsideLands SF 2009 Day 2......bring on the musicians!

Demo guy here.  And while I've been here at the SF Outsidelands Music festival here in Golden Gate park, I've got a chance to speak with some of the performers of the festival and see how they've been digging the weekend festivities.

Raphael Saardiq was great enough to come by the Intel Dome after his Day 2 performance to talk to me a little bit about Outsidelands and Intel Technology.  If you can hear over the jaming Intel DJ, Raphael had some great things to say about the concert experience, and how he wouldn't dream of using anything other than Intel platforms to produce all his projects (exagerating a little, but check the vid....).

Live from the Outlands Intel Dance Party......is Intel cool again?

Yeah, you heard it.  Intel Dance Party!  Imprumptu, but a dance party none-the-less.

I got asked to come out to the Outsidelands in San Francisco @ Golden Gate Park to cover our Intel Dome and get a good look at the over 100 bands during the 3 day concert.

"Sure, why not?"

Let's say I was a little suprised upon arriving.  The Intel Dome is a monster tent near the main venue stage, filled with an O2 bar, free drinks, augmented reality demos, live DJ, even inviting some of the attendees behind the DJ booth to do a little scratching of their own.

Blizzcon Goodie Bag - and a video montage of the event...

425_gruntymarine.jpg Ok - I’ll be totally honest here… when I was first invited to goto Blizzcon - I hesitated. Why? Well, for one - I’m not a Warcraft player, I’ve seen Starcraft, and many of my friends have lost countless hours playing the Diablo series games… so why wasn’t I hooked on these games?

After attending Blizzcon - I now realize why Blizzard’s ‘accidental community’ is such a strong community… it’s a mix of the people, the game lore, the artistry involved - and finally - the games themselves!

Starcraft 2 Fans - Blizzcon didn't forget about you!

From my previous Blizzcon blogs, you know that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and Diablo 3 have been previewed already - but many of you are die-hard Starcraft fans too! Whether you’re a Protoss, Terran or Zerg - this to be released game looks awesome!

#fnf

The games are ON, and the competition starts Friday July 3rd (here in the US) I’ve never tried Quake Live - so this should be fun!

Although, I’m not doing very well on the “Cosmic Cannon” game… (no laughs please!)

You can find more data on Friday Night Fights using Twitter #fnf hash tags, or even add @Dtoid into your favorite Twitter apps… plus you can add @Toadster too if you want (I’m pretty chatty lately about technology!)

Building a better, faster, multi-core Tomorrow @ Kid to Work Day!

Each year, I get the opportunity to volunteer at our local campus to help setup Kid to Work Day - many companies have promoted this type of activity where the employees can bring their kids to work to see what happens on a daily basis. Well, for the past 6 years - I’ve been lucky enough to host the Technology Showcase and we get to have some fun with new technology! As a member of the site committee, we get a small stipend to showcase new PC technology to Intel employees and their kids… Our Technology Showcase is always a hit, and we usually get over 2,000 visitors in one day.

Usually there are a handful of us working on the setup - and we provide 20-40 Core2 Duo systems for the kids to try out new techologies. But this year, we’ve added the Core i7 to the mix and what a setup! We built a couple Intel Core i7 Workstations setup with quad monitor displays - can you say WOW!?! What’s even more crazy is that this setup can be built for about $2.5k - I’m not kidding!

Give Me What I Want for Tomorrow -- T-Shirt and Song

Since Intel’s “Sponsors of Tomorrow” ad campaign hit TV, print, online, and on and in-store advertising campaign hit many of our daily visit spots, I’ve seen lots of great responses.

Two of the most common came in the form these requests (or demands):

Rock Stars -- Intel Sponsors of Tomorrow

  • I want an Ajay Bhatt t-shirt!
  • What is that song in the “Rock Star” TV ads?

If you have or haven’t seen the “Rock Stars” Intel Sponsors of Tomorrow TV ad, you can take a look and see why Intel’s fan base wants the T-shirt and more about the song.

Tomorrow's games are being created today...

ci7x_62.gifAs an update to my previous blog, I did take the multitude of responses and added a 2nd video card to my home PC, and the experience only got better! Now the Core i7 has increased input from the SSD, and increased output via the twin video cards! It’s EXTREME!

While I’m not opposed to manually tweaking a system, I was asked to try the latest Intel® Desktop Control Center which turns out to be a pretty decent little app. I was able to get my Core i7 965 overclocked to 4GHz! I may not set any world records, but man this machine eats everything I can throw at it! You can see my IDCC graphic on twitter.

For a speed comparison - many people are familiar with the ability to take a DVD and convert it to a mobile format. I used a utility to extract my DVD into an ISO format so it could reside on my SSD, then I used a separate app to convert the DVD into mp4 format for my iPOD. Normally, this process of converting to mp4 on my old quad core system (and spindle hard drive) would take about 20-25 minutes - not shabby, eh?

Stanford and Intel Moving Innovation Into Tomorrow

In the spirit the new Intel campaign, Sponsors of Tomorrow, I was delighted to learn about Stanford University and Intel celebrating decades collaboration and technology research "rock stars."

This is a collection of highlights from a full feature story with photos and additional interviews available at the Stanford University School of Engineering site. CNET's nanotech: the circuits blog also writes Intel fets four-decade Santford-link.

Do you know what Intel executives Craig Barrett, Pat Gelsinger and Paolo Gargini have in common? They - and hundreds of Intel employees - are Stanford University alumni who have fostered a decades-long relationship between the university and Intel based on a shared passion for technology innovation.

Meet Ajay Bhatt and the "real" Intel Rockstars

Last week, I caught up with Ajay Bhatt, Steve Whalley, Bala Cadambi and Josh Smith; and asked them about Sponsors of Tomorrow, USB, and why they like working for Intel.

In the future, I want ...?

If you haven't noticed, last week we launched the new campaign, Sponsors of Tomorrow. As part of the launch, a handful of Intel employees flew to New York and participated in pulling the NASDAQ bell to help usher in the campaign. Afterwards, my buddy Thom and I spent some time on Times Square and asked random people to finish this sentence, "In the future, I want _____."

Sponsors of Tomorrow: Just another tagline?

Clever tagline indeed; but it means much more to me personally.  I joined Intel over a year ago and I can genuinely say that my experience here has been fantastic.  I have worked with the most amazing, smart, cool and quirky people within the walls here at 2200 Mission College Blvd in Santa Clara <--- this is where I sit in case you want to send fan mail.  : P

Okay, seriously, in my mind, this new ad campaign, Sponsors of Tomorrow not only celebrates the people behind the Intel brand, but it communicates to every day people who we are, what we do and how it affects our tomorrow. Over the last 40 years or so -- way before my time - Intel has developed some really cool technologies that affect the lives of many, including mine; from cool gadgets like MIDs and Netbooks that allow me to update my Twitter status wherever I go to technologies like WiMAX that are transforming entire cities into wireless hot spots. If you know anything about me; you will know that my entire life is defined by "being connected" all the time and for that, I thank my all of my awesome co-workers and others in the industry for making that happen.
